Sr. Business Analyst
About us.
We're Tovala, a food-tech company completely reinventing home cooking to save consumers time. Through an innovative combination of hardware, software, and food, we give our customers a way to enjoy really good, good-for-you meals without sacrificing time to do whatever matters to them. We've amassed a loyal, rapidly growing following in just three years, radically changing the day-to-day lives of people across the country and successfully creating a new model for the food industry. We're looking for great people to join our team of hard-working, food-loving nerds.
About You:
At Tovala, we believe in developing data as a core technical competency. Job postings from most other companies talk on and on about stuff that really doesn’t matter. So here’s us sticking to the stuff that matters:
- You need to be results-oriented. We trust our teammates to take ownership of their work, manage their time effectively, and communicate openly about timelines, blockers, and ambiguities. Nobody checks (or cares) what hours you work - we just care that the work gets done and that you feel happy and supported doing it.
- You need to be adaptable and collaborative. Our team’s focus will evolve as the company grows. You will work on cross-functional projects spanning the whole organization. You will collaborate with coworkers with different expertise, experiences, and mental frameworks. As our team grows, you will have the opportunity to coach junior teammates.
- You need to be technical. As the company scales, our processes need to scale. We intend for our analytical processes, from data sanitization to predictive forecasts, to be both rigorous and extensible. You will be trusted to make and justify tradeoffs between scalable solutions and “good enough for now” solutions depending on the scope, impact, and urgency of the problem at hand.
- We want you to bring your whole, authentic self to work. Give us a chance to appreciate the person behind the job title. Bonus points if your authentic self is passionate about food (cooking, eating, or philosophizing about).
Your Day to Day:
- Translate business questions into technical projects and provide answers supported by data and statistical analysis.
- Prioritize, scope, and plan analytics projects collaboratively with business stakeholders.
- Establish and report on company-wide benchmarks and performance metrics.
- Present analytical insights and their impact to a broad and varied audience.
- Identify and substantiate causal associations between events and observations within the data.
- Evaluate our current analytics toolkit and redesign models (churn prediction, meal demand, staffing forecasts, etc.) where appropriate.
- Drive customer segmentation to support the Growth, Retention, and Menu teams in their marketing and retention efforts.
- Collaborate with Data Engineers and ETL Developers to establish and enforce best practices for data ingestion, modeling, normalization, visualization, etc.
- Review design docs and pull requests to maintain quality and accuracy of the team's code and analytical outputs.
- Provide transparency through effective documentation (sources, assumptions, logic, limitations, recommendations, and caveats).
- Challenge institutional intuition. There are a lot of things we “know” from anecdotal evidence. Use data to confirm or deny widely held beliefs across the organization.
Requirements:
- B.A. or higher degree in a STEM field (equivalent professional experience is fine)
- 4+ years experience making business recommendations based on statistical analysis
- High SQL proficiency (familiarity with NoSQL engines will help)
- Proficiency in one or more programmatic stats packages (pandas/koalas, R, Julia, etc.)
- Proficiency in Looker (or similar BI tool)
- Proficiency in Excel (some processes still live in spreadsheets; startup life)
- Experience using version-control to develop and update code (git, bitbucket, etc.)
- The ability to Google a concept, then explain it to a 5 year old.
