As a Senior Aftermarket Data Scientist in the global aftermarket analytics team of Cat Digital, you will be tasked with enabling services growth by collaborating with other teams such as aftermarket leads and insights, business segments, and Cat Digital Analytics to maximize the value extraction of our digital products and services. With over one million connected assets worldwide, our business and in the industries, we serve, data is generated continuously by Cat® equipment using the latest technology, advanced analytics, telematics and AI capabilities to help our customers build a better world.

Job Duties:
Significant responsibilities of this position are working with people; enhancing the team's creativity; maintaining knowledge of approaches used in similar projects; and pushing the technical bounds of experimentation while meeting customer commitments. The Senior Data Scientist acts as a technical leader for establishing and maintaining a sound analytic approach for solving the problem at hand. This individual will develop good networks within the technical community to enable them to collaborate on technical solutions, obtain resources and cooperation needed, and remove roadblocks so that they can ensure the success of their team.
The Senior Data Scientist will:

  • Demonstrate a breadth of knowledge in the application statistical methods and/or digital methods to solve business problems
  • Coach and mentor other Information Scientists in the creation, validation, and application of statistical models, as well as in implementing digital solutions
  • Participate on 3-4 projects concurrently
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of Caterpillar Inc.; its products and services; its internal systems, processes, and procedures; and its relevant external influences (competitors, laws and regulations, market conditions, etc.) to meet or exceed customer expectations.
  • Demonstrate strong initiative to research and apply new methods to exceed customer expectations.
  • Have a strong focus on continual learning in the Analytics field
  • Possess thorough statistical and/or digital technology knowledge and the ability to solve low to medium complexity problems.
  • Have very good communication skills, being able to explain conclusions to customers with limited knowledge and experience with quantitative analytical methods.


The Senior Data Scientist reports to an Analytics Supervisor and bears primary responsibility for solving the business problem presented through applied analytics. Individual work will primarily be directed by a designated team leader.
Basic Qualifications:

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree, preferably in statistics, economics, mathematics, or a similar field with quantitative coursework, and 3+ years of professional experience utilizing quantitative analysis is required, or a Master's degree and 2+ years of experience, or a PhD and 1+ years of experience in relevant experience.
  • 3+ years of experience applying python programming and SQL to solve business challenges
  • Must be comfortable working in MS Office, and industry standard statistics and data visualization packages.


Top Candidates Will Also Have:

  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills and evidence of continuous learning in the analytics field
  • Breadth and depth of knowledge in the application of statistical and/or digital methods to solve business problems (including Machine Learning, Set theory...)
  • Experience leading analytics projects connecting data from various business domains and providing forecasts and insights to run the business profitably (joins, unions, cleansing...)
  • Strong initiative to research and apply new methods and digital technologies to exceed customer expectations.
  • Must have ability to communicate effectively with team members and others in the work group, as well as non-technical and business audiences
  • Demonstrate strong leadership, initiative, interpersonal skills
  • Experience with Snowflake / AWS / Tableau visualization is a plus


This position has the option to be based out of either our Chicago, IL or Peoria, IL offices with flexibility for partial work from your home.
