JOB PURPOSE:
Caterpillar's Large Power Systems Division (LPSD) designs and manufactures diesel and gas engines, ranging from 400 kilowatts to 16 megawatts of power, and the key engine systems such as fuel, air, after treatment and cooling which are used to power oil & gas, electric power, marine, rail and Cat machine applications around the world. In addition, LPSD products include Caterpillar Advanced Power Products which include batteries, chargers, inverts, energy storage systems, controllers and fuel cells.
Caterpillar's LPSD currently has an opening for a Senior Information Scientist in the Analytics team. This position is located at our Mossville Tech Center facility. In this role, you will successfully lead projects to invent and develop analytics solutions for moderate to highly complex technical problems related to power and engine systems. What sets LPSD Analytics group apart among other digital teams is the combination of deep analytics expertise coupled with engine or engineering domain knowledge.
The LPSD Analytics team analyzes engine data and develops analytics models for diagnostics, predictive and prognostic condition monitoring. The Senior Information Scientist contributes to this mission by acting as a developer for complex analytics models.
JOB DUTIES:
The principal responsibility of Senior Information Scientist is to develop complex analytics models for Condition Monitoring of our products (mostly engines, but can also include transmissions and electric power sources).
The Senior Information Scientist will:

  • Design, develop and deploy state-of-the-art machine learning models using large time-series data
  • Work in a fast-paced, collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment to develop innovative solutions for predictive maintenance
  • Seek, listen and interpret feedback from stakeholders, product partners and internal customers
  • Explain technical topics, capabilities and limitations of AI models to engineers and business partners


Significant challenges of this position are applying machine learning techniques to develop models using time series data from our products with limited ground truth. The Senior Information Scientist acts as key contributor for the team in establishing a sound analytic approach for solving the problem at hand. The incumbent will develop good networks within the technical community to enable them to collaborate on technical solutions, obtain resources and cooperation needed, and remove roadblocks so that they can ensure the success of their team.
The Senior Information Scientist reports to the Model Development Manager within LPSD Analytics.
The Senior Information Scientist demonstrates thorough statistical and/or digital technology knowledge and the ability to solve complex problems. He or she demonstrates very good communication skills, being able to explain conclusions to customers with limited knowledge and experience with quantitative analytical methods. As the first Senior technical analytic position, they are not expected to have previous experience leading teams, but they should exhibit strong communications, a penchant for innovation, above average initiative, people development, and interpersonal skills.
Basic Requirements:

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree, preferably in computer science, engineering with heavy emphasis on analytics, statistics, mathematics, or a similar field with quantitative coursework.
  • An advanced degree, MS or preferably PhD is strongly desired.
  • Minimum industry experience needed is 7-10 years for Bachelor's degrees, 4-6 years of experience for MS, or 1-3 years for PhD degrees.
  • Experience building deep learning models using CNNs, RNNs (LSTMs), Autoencoders, etc.
  • Experience with Python machine learning libraries such as scikit-learn, XGBoost, Tensorflow/Keras, Pytorch,etc.
  • Hands on experience with large time-series data and/or natural language processing (NLP)
  • Proficiency in Python coding patterns for data science
  • Proficiency in software engineering workflows for data science (notebooks, managing environments, testing, Git, CI/CD)

  • Demonstrate strong initiative to research and apply new methods to exceed customer expectations.
  • Have a strong focus on continual learning in the Analytics field
  • An engineering degree or engineering aptitude is highly desirable for this position.
  • Must be comfortable working in MS Office, and industry standard statistics and data visualization packages.
  • Must demonstrate strong leadership, initiative, interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively.
