Description

We are looking for a Decarbonization Project Engineer to manage development and execution of energy efficiency projects with our commercial customers. This is a mid-level position.

In this role, you will be playing a key technical role in projects that include energy auditing, energy focused construction, and energy efficiency financing. You will also collaborate with the sales team to define project opportunities and support the development of innovative energy and financing solutions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct energy audits on commercial buildings (typically ASHRAE level 1 & 2).
  • Collect and analyze building data, including utility bills, equipment specifications, BMS trend data, and occupancy patterns.
  • Assess the energy performance of HVAC and lighting systems, identifying areas of potential improvement and energy conservation measures.
  • Work closely with the sales team to define project requirements and ensure alignment between proposed solutions and customer needs.
  • Estimate the costs of recommended energy conservation measures, including equipment upgrades, retrofits, and controls optimizations.
  • Develop detailed scopes of work based on proposed energy conservation measures.
  • Create RFP documents from the developed scopes of work and coordinate the RFP process for construction contractors to bid on the work.
  • Calculate the potential savings and payback periods associated with implementing energy conservation measures
  • Participate in the preparation of detailed energy audit reports, outlining findings, recommendations, and cost-benefit analyses
  • Participate in project implementation by:
    • Assisting the construction team in finalizing the contractor scope
    • Providing engineering support during construction, including design and submittal reviews
    • Help resolve technical issues during construction
    • Commissioning of the installed measures
  • Other responsibilities include:
    • Staying up to date on advanced controls and innovative energy efficiency and sustainability technologies
    • Contribute to improvements in company standard procedures, documents, and software

Requirements

Residency:

  • Candidates must 
    • Reside in the San Francisco Bay Area or be willing to relocate to the area within 6 weeks of start date
    • Have the legal right to work in the United States without sponsorship

Experience:

  • 3-6 years proven experience in energy auditing and/or retrocommissioning of commercial buildings

Technical Skills:

  • Estimating the costs of energy conservation measures and calculating potential savings.
  • Proficiency in analyzing energy consumption data
  • Proficiency in interpreting MEP plans, drawings, and specifications.
  • Solid understanding of HVAC and lighting systems in commercial buildings.
  • Solid working knowledge of building automation systems and energy management platforms
  • Understanding of new construction and/or existing building commissioning (RCx)
  • Proficiency with office applications (Excel, Word) and other standard industry software
  • Knowledge of construction cost estimation, budgeting, and scheduling

Soft Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information in a clear and concise manner
  • Self-motivated, responsible, and able to work effectively with minimal supervision in a dynamic and unstructured environment
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and build strong relationships with clients, building engineers, consultants and contractors

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Energy Management, Engineering, or a related field

Travel

  • Local travel to job sites in the Bay Area and occasionally in SoCal
  • Travel to company offsite meetings (location varies)

Other Valued Qualifications

  • Professional certification in energy auditing or related field (e.g., Certified Energy Auditor, Certified Energy Manager, Building Energy Assessment Professional)
  • Training or experience in HVAC design
  • Experience with utility incentive programs and knowledge of applicable rebates and incentives
