We're looking for an outstandingly hardworking, hands-on engineering Director who has the proven expertise and experience leading the creation of modern, rich, interactive web applications for our millions of users!

You will be responsible for leading the platform engineering team which owns Upwork’s Vue/Nuxt-powered UI framework, frontend infrastructure, and design system component library.

You have deep expertise in frontend and UI development, but understand system architecture and design throughout the entire web technology stack, and are comfortable working with production systems at scale.

Your Responsibilities:

• Manage a team of high-caliber engineers to build, maintain, and constantly evolve the next-generation front-end architecture at Upwork. This is a Platform team, so the mentality of addressing horizontal concerns is a must.

• Direct your team to define, architect, and deliver on the vision. Strategize and plan to implement our components and services with minimal/zero-friction and high adoptability.

• Identify new/emerging technologies for adoption, drive consistent code reviews. Apply your technical expertise in solving complicated programming and design problems.

• As a coach & mentor to your direct report staff (Managers, Senior Engineers, and Architects) you will ensure the high productivity of the team members. Provide support for their career growth and personal development.

• Collaborate with feature and component teams during both design and development phases to ensure alignment to UI architectural standards.

What it takes to catch our eye:

• Hands-on experience with modern front-end web technologies (HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, frameworks such as react.js and vue.js), application servers, and tooling (e.g., npm/yarn, Webpack, Jenkins, GraphQL, etc.)

• Hands-on experience building applications, at scale, with Node.js.

• Excellent written and verbal interpersonal skills. Our teams are widely distributed, and you will need to communicate and coordinate with technical and non-technical audiences across different cultures and timezones.

• You’re a Service Provider first; technology is your medium. You have a very strong focus on the customer and the business.
