What are the primary responsibilities of this role? 

Head  of Design establishes and represents the foundational vision, evolution, and expansion of Collective Health’s user experience across all customer touch-points. You partner with lines of business leaders to identify, prioritize, and push forward conceptualization of new capabilities. Together, you make crucial decisions about the direction, priorities, and experience quality that teams reporting into your leadership circle will be accountable to inform and deliver. You need a powerful imagination, and also be great at listening, inspiring, being direct, putting ideas on the table, and executing to achieve shared goals.

  • Represent Collective Health’s Design organization at the highest level.
  • Cultivate an empowered team consisting of a multitude of specialists and generalists in all design and research disciplines across multiple geographies.
  • Manage and mentor a team of design leads and managers empowering them to be effective people managers and coaches. 
  • Partner with Product Development, Engineering, Commercial, and Marketing Leadership to inform and drive business initiatives forward  that result in desired impact.
  • Collaborate on and influence strategic vision for the Collective Health product offerings, bringing together multiple product areas into a holistic experience.
  • Play a key role in customer, prospect, and partner interactions by providing a compelling story of Collective Health’s product experience.
  • Be a strong voice for Collective Health in the broader product and design community.
  • Coach team members in understanding how to balance business goals, speed, quality, and impact.
  • Create broad visibility into learnings and impact; develop organization-wide understanding of and enthusiasm for the strategic impact your team delivers to the company.

Cultivate an empowered team of designers

Your team spans a few geographies—in our SF campus, our Chicago office (CHI), as well as potential other offices as we look to expand design services within the company. It includes specialists and generalists in the design and research disciplines. 


You are dedicated to the success of your team and regularly spend time with your team to understand what’s working and what needs to change. You are transparent about your leadership philosophy so they know where you’re coming from and what you expect of them. You make visible a path for the team to do the kind of work they care about while also helping them see growth opportunities that will advance their careers, the business, and the experiences our customers have.

Inform and drive outcomes, with Product and Tech partners

We live in a world where real-time data and AI-powered experiences are becoming the norm, and in which privacy and security are paramount. You’re leading the design of an entirely new healthcare and health insurance system and will be required to deeply understand the needs of a diverse set of players - employers, brokers and consultants, members, as well as, internal business groups. Your team is responsible for designing experiences that enable others to make informed, confident choices, access the best care at the best cost and do their best work. Additionally, all of this must be done in a well-managed, secure way! To do that you built lock-step partnerships with your peers in Security, IT, and Customer Experiences to help you and your team understand what needs to be considered to ensure all our data is secure.

Set and hold a high quality bar

You’re accountable for product experience quality. That means defining the bar for what is expected from the design team, and making necessary tradeoffs to mitigate risks and continue iteratively delivering and learning on what’s been released already.

What are the specific tasks that will be performed and what percentage of time will the individuals in this role spend doing each task? 

  • Business strategy, planning, and prioritization (30%)
  • People management, performance reviews, and coaching (40%)
  • Organizational design, change management and operations (20%)
  • Recruitment, hiring, community engagement (10%)

Qualifications:

  • Human-Centered Design principles and methodologies
  • Concepts and principles of Systems Design-thinking
  • Understanding of UX Research methods and their applications
  • People Management & Development methods for creative professionals
  • Cross organizational collaboration
  • Change management
  • Mastery of design tooling - Sketch, Creative Suite, Figma.
  • Communication and presentation skills that can tell a compelling storytelling
  • At least 10 years of professional experience designing multi-touchpoint digital products
  • At least 5 years of people management experience
  • 2+ years of experience leading multi-disciplinary teams in a product or software company
  • Familiarity working on consumer grade data-driven product and platform experiences
  • Mastery in design thinking, systems design, and human centered design
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with product and engineering counterparts
  • Demonstrated experience building relationships and influencing at the executive level
  • Strong storytelling capabilities; an ability to weave key insights into a compelling narrative and rationale case
  • Strong self-awareness and ability to bring rational, critical thought to tough conversations
  • Experienced in change management and ability to keep teams positive, motivated and focused through times of change
  • Experience growing and developing strong, collaborative and effective  teams
  • General understanding of engineering concepts and principles, coding languages, capabilities and limitations of each

Preferred but not required:

  • Understanding of healthcare industry
  • Experience driving product design across both consumer and enterprise 
  • Master's Degree
