The position.

As a Senior Product Designer on Root’s growth and distribution team, you’ll be focused on building new product experiences that help Root reach new customers. You’ll work closely with product managers, engineers, data scientists and the business team to define, craft and deliver a beautiful, useful and intuitive product experience. You’ll seek ways to solve customer problems and help Root to grow as a business.

Root has a flexible approach to work. Candidates within the US can choose to work on-site in Columbus or Chicago, or majority remote with in-person visits as needed.

About you.

  • You deeply empathize with customers.

You put every effort into understanding what our customers – and their customers – need. Your experience and intuition give you a strong signal to head towards. What you don’t know, you learn through qualitative and quantitative research, analyzing previous test results, competitive analysis and whatever other tools are at your disposal.

  • You are a thoughtful generalist.

You design from start to finish. This means working with your partners in product management to define problems, understand and iterate on possible solutions, create prototypes and wireframes with a keen eye for visual design. You’re comfortable working closely with engineering throughout development to ensure the final product works as you intended and looks as good in the hands of the people using it as it did on your screen.

  • You solve business problems.

You internalize business objectives and ship products and experiences that reach them. You understand how to focus on a core hypothesis and don’t get distracted by features that detract from that goal.

  • You have strong opinions, weakly held.

You express your opinions passionately but are open to changing those opinions in the face of new data. You challenge your colleagues to consider alternative viewpoints and advocate for the customer every step of the way. You focus on finding a shared vision and strategic alignment with your partners and strive for continual progress.

What you'll be doing.

  • Be actively involved with defining product strategy & roadmaps
  • Apply human-centered design methodologies and design cohesive experiences
  • Work cross-functionally with UX research, engineering, product, marketing, sales and leadership to shape product
  • Collaborate with UX research to identify when and how to conduct user research studies and put insights into action
  • Distill complex problems into easy to understand user flows and wireframes. Build interactive or motion prototypes to communicate experience
  • Leverage our internal design system to create high fidelity designs that leverage established components and contribute back new components
  • Collaborate with product management and engineering to bring your designs to market as A/B tests and at scale
  • Socialize your work to leadership as well as peers across the company
  • Learn everything there is to know about insurance and telematics

What we're looking for.

  • You have 5+ years of experience in interaction design, product design or related field
  • You’re a customer champion and practitioner of human-centered and service design methodologies with a deep understanding of digital product development.
  • You’re a self-starter who thrives in ambiguity, and can balance switching between strategy-level and pixel-level work.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills
  • You’re comfortable learning about complex workflows across multiple industries (telematics-based insurance, fleet management, retail, etc).
  • You’re naturally curious about new business and technology opportunities and shaping future product direction
  • Comfortable designing products from MVP to ideal state with experience developing experiment driven work
