Work you’ll do
The Design Consultant works as part of Doblin + Customer Strategy & Applied Design’s innovation delivery teams to collaboratively define new future business concepts and new product/service/system offerings, including conceptual direction and formal expression, under the direction of a project manager or more senior designer. This individual will be expected to demonstrate primary interest and experience within the design practice, and also bring a client-facing skillset required to execute innovation consulting projects.
Day-to-day work will include working with a multi-disciplinary set of colleagues and contributing heavily to the design process throughout client casework. Internally, Design Consultants are responsible for contributing to the development and communication of principles, methods and intellectual property related to Doblin + Customer Strategy & Applied Design’s design capability, sometimes to audiences of non-designers.
Specific responsibilities include:
Design and develop client communication materials and client events (overall experience, supporting assets and artifacts, etc.)
Support client engagement and internal teams in the exploratory development and iterative processes.
Define visual direction for of new offerings and businesses.
Co-lead concept prototyping and evaluative testing of new concepts
Support business development and proposals for new client work
Contribute to internal research and development projects
Provide feedback, support and mentorship to more junior design team members
Customer Strategy & Applied Design
Our Customer Strategy & Applied Design team focuses on helping clients discover, design, and prototype customer growth strategies and innovation portfolios to create and drive change in a digital world. We bring knowledge and offerings to uncover the behaviors, motivations and preferences of our clients’ customers and develop new experiences for them. Our team of professionals has deep capabilities in strategy, customer experience, digital strategy and innovation.

- Customer Strategy| Help clients build capabilities to better understand customer value drivers and make choices about the markets and segments they serve through digital, social, and mobile channels; optimize pricing decisions and shape the most strategic issues on the CMO agenda
- Customer Experience | Help clients improve the quality, nature and power of interactions between the customer and the organization across the lifecycle of sales, marketing and service at each and every touch point.
- Applied Innovation | Help clients rapidly design, prototype and launch new businesses and experiences, translating insights on human behavior from design-led methods into offerings and technologies that delight customers and drive growth
- Digital Strategy | Help clients understand, envision and articulate “digital” as a business strategy aligned with their CEO’s agenda – and then craft a plan to embed everything they do with the latest technology solutions and business models to compete in the marketplace for customers and talent
Experience and expectations
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
1+ years relevant design experience
Ability to travel at least 50%
Strong portfolio demonstrating excellent command of composition, typography, color and fundamental communication
Ability to work in dynamic, often ambiguous conditions requiring rapid transitions between collaborative and individual work
Technical proficiency with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, etc.
Doblin + Customer Strategy & Applied Design provides opportunities for Design Consultants to choose a path that suits them once they have gained exposure to the process. Some choose to pursue a design specialty over time, while others follow a more generalist innovation consultant path, which includes project management roles.
