API Technical Writer

Position Overview 

Reporting into the Senior Director, Product Management, the API Technical Writer will work closely with Lead Technical Documentation Specialist, Product Analysts and Product Developers in order to write technical documentation for our external developer audience. Qualified individuals must be experienced in developing and creating software-based product documentation. Strong content development and technical writing experience combined with collaborative effort in a fast-paced, environment is essential.  

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Produce and maintain developer-oriented documentation (API documentation) in addition to end-user documentation. 
  • Work closely with engineers and product managers as APIs are developed to author technical documentation in real time and ensure delivery of high quality, accurate content. 
  • Contribute to strategic initiatives around content restructuring, new tool selection, and internal process improvements. 
  • Aid in the creation and implementation of standard operating procedures and style guides for the documentation team and content contributors. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • A minimum of 4 years in a technical writer role, preferably in the software industry. 
  • A Bachelor’s degree in a technical or communication field, or equivalent work experience in a fast-paced technology environment. 
  • Experience working directly with engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to help document (and define) new developer products and features. 
  • Experience writing common forms of developer documentation (API reference, conceptual guides, and tutorials). 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with familiarity in technical communication fundamentals. 
  • Comfortable handling multiple deadlines and self-prioritization of ad hoc requests. 

Ideal Qualifications: 

  • Experience strategizing and developing technical documentation architecture and processes. 
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. 
  • Basic ability to read, modify, and test sample code, such as Java or Apex. 
  • Bonus: Experience working with Salesforce. 
  • Bonus: Familiarity with API documentation tools such as Swagger or Apex Docs.

Our office is centrally located in the Loop close to various train stations. Bike year round, we have an indoor bike storage facility.
