Groupon’s mission is to become the daily habit in local commerce and fulfill our purpose of building strong communities through thriving small businesses by connecting people to a vibrant, global marketplace for local services, experiences and goods. In the process, we’re positively impacting the lives of millions of customers and merchants globally. Even with thousands of employees spread across multiple continents, we still maintain a culture that inspires innovation, rewards risk-taking and celebrates success. If you want to take more ownership of your career, then you're ready to be part of Groupon.

We are looking for a senior engineering leader to lead the Analytics and Actionable Insights Platform. In this role, you’ll drive the vision, strategy, and engineering execution of this platform. The mission of the team is to evolve our tooling as we move towards the delivery of ‘near-realtime’ data pipelines for both business-critical and operational metrics.

This is an opportunity to drive a major engineering initiative, influence Groupon level KPIs, and work with leading-edge technologies. The challenge is to provide our engineering organization with a robust underpinning of tools, standards, and practices in the areas of Messaging, Streaming, Monitoring, Performance Engineering, Distributed Tracing, Metrics, and Analytics. A measure of success is that engineering and operations teams can continue to raise the bar on Service Level Agreements and MTTR goals through improved serviceability of software. Another goal for this role is an increase in feature velocity by providing engineering teams with a set of standards for monitoring.

At Groupon, we look to hire hands-on leaders at all levels. You will dive deep into the details of the business, operations, and engineering. We need technical, hands-on leaders who can build and grow organizations. You’ll need to excel at hiring and developing a team of strong software development engineers. Our services operate at large scale and on critical workloads, so a passion and discipline around operational excellence are key. You’ll also need to be willing to share big ideas and execute to deliver the next big innovations at a rapid pace.

We're a "best of both worlds" kind of company. We're big enough to have resources and scale, but small enough that a single person has a surprising amount of autonomy and can make a meaningful impact. We're curious, fun, a little intense, and passionate about helping local businesses thrive. Does that sound like a compelling place to work?

You will spend your time on the following:

You will collaborate with other senior engineering and operational leaders to ensure standards are defined and rapidly adopted including but not limited to -

  • Messaging and Stream Processing

  • API Transactional Data Quality Management

  • System and Application Health Monitoring, Alerting

  • Availability, Security, and Reliability Reporting

  • Logging, and Transaction Tracing

  • Performance Benchmarking

We are excited to talk to you if you have:

  • 10+ years of software development experience building large-scale enterprise software or SaaS products.

  • 5+ years of experience in building, managing, and growing high-performance software engineering teams.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent experience).

  • Experience with Big Data and Real-time streaming frameworks.

  • Technical leadership and engineering delivery experience in building end to end self-service proactive solutions with specific focus on Metrics, and Monitoring systems.

  • Knowledge of operational metrics requirements for hyper-scale applications. Experience in eCommerce will be a plus.

  • Knowledge of various analytics platforms, measurement solutions, data visualization tools, and experience using these tools to provide meaningful insight.

  • Experience driving operational excellence and engineering best practices for large-scale distributed systems.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences.

  • Experience with current DevOps toolchains for infrastructure deployment, software build/test/deploy, and systems/application monitoring/logging such as Jenkins, Ansible, Maven, Chef, SALT, Puppet, ELK, Splunk, AppDynamics, etc.

  • Cloud Migration experience with AWS or GCP; Kubernetes experience will be a plus.
