Upwork is looking for a passionate and hardworking technical leader to architect and lead the development of innovative solutions for our largest client accounts and agencies. The large accounts teams are creating incredible experiences to grow adoption of Upwork within large and mid-size businesses including the full build out of our Agencies offering. As a manager on our team, you will work to bring solutions that grow the Upwork Program’s success within our clients’ organizations. This will ultimately make it easy for them to find amazing talent to complete their projects and improve their organizations’ success.
- Be at the forefront of an effort to modernize and expand the engineering capabilities used to grow our large clients’ capabilities and help them connect with our freelancers.
- Establish architectural principles, identify state of the art technologies and patterns to use, and increase the talent density of the team.
- Drive a high standard of excellence for UI/UX creation, web service scalability, and performance.
- Integrate multiple facets of our organization, including our data platform, identity platform, as well as marketplace product offerings to be optimized for our large clients.
- Own the team’s technical strategy and execution.
What it takes to catch our eye:
- 5+ years of development experience, 4+ years of Java and web technology experience, and 2+ years of building and managing high-performing distributed engineering teams.
- Experience in designing and developing scalable, well-tuned, and highly available solutions.
- Deep understanding of Web technologies, Microservices, and databases.
- Phenomenal software design principles: Understand system boundaries and make system design decisions which will impact long term maintainability of our codebase.

- Excellent written and verbal interpersonal skills. Our teams are widely distributed, and you will be required to communicate with technical and non-technical audiences across different cultures.
