To direct and participate in the design and development of complex, major engineering product or process projects for release to production in a manner to ensure products provide superior performance, durability, quality, and serviceability.
Job Duties
For Caterpillar, digital means using technology to extract data from our machines and engines and transform it into valuable recommendations or "insights," to help customers make better, more informed decisions and help Caterpillar make robust products with the lowest total ownership cost. Our products generate and process large amounts of data from sensors, on-board models, and control algorithms in real-time creating real-world machine usage information. The Engineering Specialist- Electronic Technical Engineer develops solutions for complex technical engineering problems and may be accountable for the design or improvement of complex systems or processes. In addition to demonstrating technical expertise, a person in this position may be called on to act as a team and/or project leader. But major focus is on technical delivery. Must demonstrate ability to develop and perform on a complex project or program. Direct work with other units, suppliers, customers, and teams require the incumbent demonstrate skill in negotiation, building consensus, and achieving compromise. Impact of decisions made by this position may be far-reaching, to include the project team or immediate work group, division, and/or business unit, suppliers, internal and external customers, and Caterpillar markets. Decisions may significantly impact warranty, patents, products or processes, technology, costs, sales, and customer perceptions.
In order to develop the platforms effectively, this position must work closely with Engine and Machine System/Subsystem team members to understand the application requirements and performance needs. For some components, the platform includes embedded software as a key deliverable, so coordination of this activity with the appropriate teams is required. A strong knowledge of analog and digital hardware design and/or product application is necessary to develop robust solutions and assess the application suitability as well as a thorough understanding of the mechanical and environmental requirements for the application. In addition to new development, current production hardware will be maintained and supported through the platform lifecycle including obsolescence management.
Success factors for the Technology Specialist - Design are strong communication, spatial and conceptual design skills, and an understanding of customers' needs and product application. Major challenges facing incumbents are keeping up-to-date with technology and developing increased technical breadth and/or depth. Responsibilities of this position demand that the incumbent understand complex technical problems and demonstrate the ability to develop creative solutions. Technical leadership skills are essential. Though the focus of the job is technical contribution, project management skills may be required.
The position responsibilities include a strong focus on quality through simulation, analysis, verification, and validation testing at the component level, subsystem, and system level. Significant troubleshooting and analysis skills are needed to resolve complex development and field issues and to improve overall performance and cost. This individual is considered a deep technical expert in the component product area.
The Engineering Specialist- Electronic Technical Engineer is expected to provide technical leadership and training to new staff members. Good communication is expected for technical status updates, component reviews, and when working closely with other internal and external teams in multiple geographic locations and organizations. Keeping up with industry trends and new technology breakthroughs is essential and requires continuous learning through self/internet study.
Technology Specialists must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of technology. This position must develop increased technical breadth and/or depth at this level, as well as gaining increased business management skills. Additional key skills at this level include development of acceptance criteria, new product introduction process, spatial design, conceptual design, practical application of theory, knowledge of the NPI process, and communication skills.
Basic Qualifications
Requires a bachelor degree in an accredited Engineering curriculum (Electrical, Computer, Mechanical) plus 7-9 years of experience in embedded electronic hardware development or a master degree in an Electrical or Computer Engineering curriculum plus 5-7 years of experience in embedded electronic hardware development
