Description
The Senior Design Engineer - ECM is recognized as a technical expert in analog designs for electronic control modules in the ECM hardware team. The position develops, improves, and troubleshoots complex electronic/electrical hardware used in an array of engine and machine systems including battery management systems and power supplies. This generally includes the development of product requirements, analysis and simulation, electronic component selection, schematic/layout development, and platform verification and validation. Some or all of these activities may be performed in partnership with a supplier including the manufacturing plan and process development.
In order to develop the platforms effectively, this position must work closely with Engine and Machine System/Subsystem team members to understand the application requirements and performance needs. The platform typically includes embedded software as a key deliverable, so coordination of this activity with the appropriate teams is required. A strong knowledge of analog and digital hardware design and/or product application is necessary to develop robust solutions and assess the application suitability as well as a thorough understanding of the mechanical and environmental requirements for the application. In addition to new development, current production hardware will be maintained and supported through the platform lifecycle including component supply and obsolescence management.
Strong technical, communication, and, leadership skills are essential. Major challenges facing incumbents are keeping up to date with technology and demonstrating technical expertise in a specialty area. Technical leadership skills are essential, and the incumbent must be able to communicate effectively across the organization.
Job Duties
Key accountability for technical leadership in the concept, design, and development for electronic control modules including build to print as well as build to spec products
Develop understanding of customer and application requirements and develop creative solutions
Subject matter expert supporting the ECM hardware team as well as other component groups
Collaboration with global Caterpillar component, systems, and procurement teams as well as suppliers
Mentoring of other engineers on the ECM hardware team
Manage personal development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of technology
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in accredited Electrical Engineering Curriculum
10+ years related engineering design experience
Top Candidates will also have
Master's degree in accredited Electrical Engineering Curriculum
Demonstrated technical knowledge and experience with analog and power supply designs
Experience with battery management systems
Knowledge of the New Product Introduction Process
Excellent analytical skills and the ability to perform complex assignments.
Requires a self-starter with strong technical leadership skills.
Must have the ability to communicate technical information effectively with team members and others in the workgroup, as well as employees in other units, customers, and suppliers.

The location for this position is Mossville IL, Woodridge IL, or Clayton NC
