Rocket Travel is looking for a Engineering Manager - Frontend with deep expertise with frontend technologies to join our rapidly growing global engineering team. Today, we're a hybrid team headquartered out of Chicago's West Loop, with team members spread out across the globe from the domestic locales of Michigan to Florida, and Florianópolis, Brazil to Bangkok, Thailand.

As an Engineering Manager (Frontend) at Rocket Travel, you will:

  • Have a large impact on the success of the frontend discipline as a whole.
  • Identify and provide technical leadership to high-value projects and keep your team focused on these projects.
  • Manage engineers, and serve as a technical mentor for them in their career progression, offering feedback, giving mentoring, and reviewing performance.
  • Spend much less time writing code, but still engage in small technical deliverables such as bug fixes and small features, in order to unblock your engineers and increase overall velocity.
  • Be responsible for identifying bottlenecks in the process and roadblocks to success of your team and clearing these roadblocks.
  • Identify resourcing needs for the team and be heavily involved in the recruiting and onboarding new engineers.

About You:

At Rocket Travel, we’re building a diverse team that values accountability, curiosity, and community. If you share these values and are interested in joining us, we’d love to talk with you even if you don’t meet 100% of the requirements listed here. We don’t expect anyone to have all the answers, as long as they’re willing to learn and grow with us.

  • You have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or closely related degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • You have a minimum of 3 years of hands-on technical leadership and people management experience.
  • You have a minimum of 3 years hands-on programming experience in Java, Javascript or Typescript.
  • You have strong systems and architecture knowledge and experience.
  • You have a passion for quality.
  • You have experience leading distributed teams and successfully shipping products.
  • You can communicate effectively and clearly.
  • You have deployed applications to AWS or a similar cloud provider.

Rocket Travel is a place where you:

  • Work with a group of intrinsically motivated people with a track record for building successful new businesses from scratch.
  • Embody curiosity, community, and accountability. We live and build products by these values every day.
  • Own decisions and take action that can be implemented in a matter of days (or hours).
  • Get inspired and are encouraged to vacation faster, with an annual travel stipend that lets you see the world and test drive our product(s).
  • Receive a competitive compensation package, including bonus, 401k with match, flexible vacation time, maternity and paternity benefits, health, and dental insurance.
  • Can work remotely. Though we have great offices in Chicago’s West Loop and in NYC’s Empire State building, we're all working remotely for the time being, and we welcome full-time remote applicants.
  • Share your passion for travel with equally adventurous teammates.
  • Work within the largest online travel company in the world. Rocket Travel creates B2C and B2B2C travel products and is part of Booking Holdings (BKNG). We have many worldwide partners and a diversified business. Despite the world’s current situation, Booking Holdings has been rated the most financially healthy company in travel on the globe, and we’re using 2021 to prepare for the future. We’re solidifying our tech stack, our business capabilities, polishing our UI, and growing our partnerships so that we’ll be ready to meet the world’s pent-up demand for travel when the time comes.

An Insider's view of Rocket Travel

What are some social events your company does?

Every year, Rocket Travel puts on an annual company retreat. Last year, we went to Scottsdale, AZ where we got to spend time with our co-workers from all across the Globe! One of my favorite memories was participating in a team building event where we got to build dog houses and donate them to military families in need.

Emma

Senior Recruiter

What does your typical day look like?

In the morning, I set time aside to drink coffee & plan my day. Our team does a daily sync to discuss goals & where we need support. The majority of my time is spent creating and updating email journeys for our partners as well as for Rocket. I enjoy brainstorming creative ideas for future campaigns & ways to engage with our audiences!

Ebony

Email Marketing Associate

How does the company support your career growth?

Something that has marked my career path has been the ability to learn from such talented & empathetic women at different levels - my managers, team, and colleagues. They are all so passionate about what they do that it is contagious! Most recently, Rocket has supported the most significant change I've ever imagined; relocating across the globe.

Andrea

Director of Strategic Partnerships (APAC/MEA)

How do you make yourself accessible to the rest of the team?

Everything from virtual hangouts to wellness check-ins have worked well, but don't necessarily replace the innovation and collaboration from "random office chats." Making it a habit to hop on a videocall or chat conversation with someone you haven't spoken to in a while can help alleviate some of that pain.

Simon

Chief Product Officer

How does your team reward individual success?

Rocket regularly refines our people processes to ensure team members have opportunities to be recognized for their contributions & build a fulfilling career here. We provide transparency around career paths and compensation. We also facilitate a performance management process, which incorporates 360 feedback, to promote professional growth!

Amy

VP of People Operations
