Job Description

Nordstrom isn’t just another job — it’s a career. We are a leading fashion retailer that has offered the very best of what is on trend for men, women, and children since 1901. We believe in rewarding outstanding work, developing employees’ careers and building long-term relationships with our customers. As an Engineering Manager at Nordstrom, you will have the opportunity to combine your passion for technology and fashion to build a compelling and delightful experience for our valued customers.

This position is about…

We are building the road to real-time, machine-learned insights and we need your help. Imagine a world where anyone from an engineer to an executive can easily discover key data within our cloud, transform it seamlessly and use machine learning to drive actual business decisions in real time. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity and we have only just begun!

As Engineering Manager for Nordstrom’s Data Ingestion platform, you will shape how teams publish data at scale. With a keen customer focus, you will collaborate with external teams, understand their needs and use those to define key metrics which quantify their satisfaction. You will also guide and provide technical solutions so that partner teams can easily send their data in real-time to Nordstrom’s Analytical Platform, NAP, using technologies like Kafka, Kubernetes and Flink. All of this will help you build a delightful ingestion platform, empowering us to better understand and delight our customers.

As a technical leader within Nordstrom, you will raise the bar for your team, helping them to deliver their best work. You will also help each team member grow, identifying teachable moments, training and work that supports their career goals.

This is a rare opportunity to join a crucial team at a pivotal moment – I hope you join us.

You are responsible for...

  • Assist in enhancing Data Ingestion platform vision and strategies to support company goals and receive guidance from more senior leaders

  • Contribute to architecture, coding, test plans, project plans, deployment planning and operations to drive excellence and lead team towards its goals

  • Employ continuous improvement methodologies across your team (e.g. quantifies impacts customer first, waste elimination, increased productivity, iterates quickly, shorten feedback loop, experience creating relevant KPIs).

  • Leading the development of technical solutions (e.g., APIs, SDKs, etc.) that support ingesting, discovering, enriching, and surfacing data across Nordstrom

  • Developing and fostering a healthy and collaborative culture for your team that embodies both industry best practices and Nordstrom values

  • Growing and developing an incredible team of talented and motivated engineers with high expectations around individual ownership and impact

  • Driving the roadmap and technical vision for the team, collaborate with product groups and partner teams to deliver value to our customers

  • Influencing key decisions on architecture and implementation of scalable, reliable, and cost-effective engineering solutions

  • Being the bar raiser, pushing the limit on how solutions are designed and built, how systems are operated, and how we support our engineers to deliver better experiences for our customers

  • Hire capable and motivated talent/teams that can deliver swiftly and predictably, adjusting in an agile fashion to deliver solutions aligned with business needs

You own this if you have...

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in Computer Science or comparable experience

  • Experience (2+ years) managing/leading a team of junior and senior engineers to achieve impactful results

  • Demonstrable experience owning and operating business critical systems servicing internal and external customers

  • Deep experience in development, are comfortable working in code and skilled at explaining and advocating for new technologies and solutions.

  • Profound care for your people and the desire to help those who want to help themselves

  • Demonstrable ability to establish a vision, define a roadmap, and to execute on it

  • Pragmatism. You can prioritize, simplify, and make a path toward results.

  • Proactive mindset. You seek the best solution for the company and customer and take action without being directed

  • The capability to truly listen to our customers and partners, internalize their needs and develop simple and elegant solutions that they can’t live without

  • A bias towards action guided by evidence-based decision-making mindset

  • Experience in AWS, Flink, Kafka, Spark, Kubernetes and REST API is a big plus

  •

How we work
