Job Description

Managers within Technology at Nordstrom help create an inspiring workplace where talented people are empowered to drive amazing customer experiences and business results. Through broad industry and practice knowledge and hands-on technical management experience, the Manager guides a team of professionals to execute strategy and tactics that deliver desired results.

 

As part of the Store Commerce Checkout and Pay team, the Engineering Manager plays a key role in building Point of Service application which enables Sales Associates to sell merchandise and services in brick and mortar stores. It includes building relations with e-commerce space to leverage enterprise capabilities. It is a fast-paced environment as customers adopt new behaviors (including during the current COVID-19 situation) that requires quick-thinking, agility, flexibility in cross-team collaboration to deliver viable solutions for our customers in a short period of time. The space is complex with moving parts of modernizing services.

 

We have a hybrid tech stack:

  • Windows 2016 servers, Win 10 front end, back end services on .Net 4.0, MS-SQL server, VB6 scripts and UI,
  • iOS Objective C
  • ReactJS, Typescript
  • Java apps 11 in docker containers on Kubernetes in AWS
  • Build/Version/Package tools Gitlab/GitlabCI, Gradle

 

A day in the life…

  • Assist in enhancing Store Commerce Org vision and strategies to support company goals and receive guidance from more senior leaders
  • Guide and motivate a highly talented team to deliver quickly and predictably, adjusting in an agile fashion to deliver efficient technical solutions aligned with business needs
  • Manage complex scope of work with multiple tracks in progress at a given time including operational excellence operating in true DevOps model.
  • Contribute to architecture, coding, test plans, project plans, deployment planning, and operations to drive excellence and lead team towards its goals
  • Employ continuous improvement methodologies across own team (e.g. quantifies impacts customer first, waste elimination, increased productivity, iterates quickly, shorten feedback loop, experience creating relevant KPIs)
  • Partner with Program, Product, and Business teams to establish short-term goals and long-term vision, including OKRs and other measurements of success
  • Connect with leadership and partners to bring back the broader business context to the engineering team, establishing how their work matters to the business
  • Develop growth plans with engineers based on opportunities, their interests, Nordstrom Competencies, and our Tech Talent Framework
  • Ensure team has the tools, resources, and information they need to be successful

 

You own this if you have…

  • 5+ years of relevant work experience
  • A BA/BS in Computer Science or closely related degree or equivalent practical experience
  • 2+ years leading engineering team
  • A passion for serving customers via software delivery and growing engineers in their careers
  • Experience in Retail domain or distributed platform is preferred but not a requirement
  • Ambition to solve ambiguous problems and cross-over between several spaces
