Department Overview
Applied Technology is a rapid prototyping center within Motorola Solutions. We create proof-of-concept and lower-volume specialty communications products for government and private industry using wireless technologies such as TETRA, LMR, DMR, 5G, LTE, UMTS, CDMA, GSM, WiFi and IoT. Our customer-centric, team based environment provides an excellent growth opportunity for engineers and developers in enterprise markets where innovation is the primary focus.
Job Description

You will be a member of a small (1-6 person) multi-disciplinary team and will be responsible for architecting, implementing, and testing FPGA-based signal processing solutions for a variety of advanced wireless communications products.

Daily Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all phases of projects, from requirements analysis and system architecture, through micro-architecture and design, coding (VHDL or Verilog), test bench design, verification, synthesis, and FPGA place and route

  • Work closely with hardware and software developers with a hands-on role in product integration and debugging using simulation and test equipment in the lab

  • Responsible for hardware engineering tasks including design, component selection, FPGA design, and validation of the entire product

  • Provide mentorship to junior engineers 

  • Regular interaction with customers

You must be a flexible, results-oriented problem-solver who requires minimal supervision. Projects can vary greatly from one to the next, so you must thrive on variety and enjoy taking on new challenges.

Desired Experience / Skills / Knowledge:

  • FPGA design using VHDL, Verilog or SystemVerilog 

  • EDA tools such as Modelsim, Cadence Incisive, Xilinx ISE/Vivado and Altera Quartus

  • Simulation (in Matlab/Simulink, Python, or equivalent) as well as implementation / verification

  • Physical layer design and implementation of one or more wireless telecommunication protocols, e.g. TETRA, LMR, DMR, 5G NR, LTE, UMTS, CDMA, GSM, WiFi and IoT

  • Configuration management tools such as Git

  • Excellent communications and teamwork skills are essential for interacting with a small project team and customers


Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) or Master of Science (MS) degree, preferably in Computer or Electrical Engineering

  • 3 - 7 years FPGA design and implementation experience

  • Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain the necessary security clearance as required by government contract
