Lead Software Engineer

Location: Chicago, IL

The Role

Gearflow is an early stage startup seeking a Lead Software Engineer that will help us build and extend our marketplace platform.  You will collaborate with our Founding team and Advisory CTO to brainstorm and prioritize features, then implement and ship them on our marketplace platform.  You will contribute to our entire technology infrastructure following set standards and successfully completing stories and have the ability to provide production level support for any part of the codebase.

What problem are we solving?

Gearflow.com is the first marketplace for all things construction.

We set out to develop a platform that makes it easy for customers to work with the thousands of suppliers that make up the construction equipment industry. Our primary goal is to enhance the buyer-supplier relationship, not get in between. In order to do that, we couldn’t just make a typical marketplace.

On Gearflow, you will find that each supplier is equipped with their own branded storefront. On a supplier’s storefront you will find information about the business, their reviews, and the inventory they have for sale.

This allows buyers to not only buy the products they need like in a typical marketplace, but also choose the right supplier for them.

Who are we?

We are driven by the pains of our customers and the opportunities they present. We started Gearflow because we have big visions. We love our customers, we work hard, and have been told we talk at the 2x podcast speed.

Most importantly, we share values:

  • Do right by the people around us
  • Work with good people
  • Show empathy
  • Stay frugal
  • Stay coachable
  • Spend time with family
  • Be self-aware
  • Conviction in our beliefs

Fundraising Status:

In 2019-2020 we closed a $1.6M Seed Round.  This fundraising round was raised off of the success of our initial platform.  We will be seeking to raise a Series A round in late 2020. We have significant interest from the Chicago VC community and many notable Chicago Angel Investors have partnered with us.

Our Stack is:

Monolith using Elixir/Phoenix, the Frontend is Native Javascript. Our Database is Postgres.  Our stack was freshly re-written (early 2020) so there’s a lot of room to grow and expand.

Who we need:

We need a hard-working individual who is not afraid to be thrown into the deep end.

A little about you:

  • You thrive in high speed, low touch working environments.
  • You love to learn.
  • You work hard and take pride in your work.
  • You can get along with anyone.

What you will be doing:

  • Developing software and scripts in Bash, Elixir, and JavaScript using development best practices such as DRY, KISS, and TDD.
  • Ownership of codebase, maintaining it and ensuring it runs consistently.
  • Be a key hands-on contributor to the design and implementation of new products and features through the entire stack.
  • Automate the provisioning of new infrastructure for new applications or systems and when scaling to meet system demand.
  • Participate in the hiring process when we seek to grow our team later in 2020
  • Secure and safeguard data to preserve its integrity, reliability and availability and ensure appropriate access levels are maintained
  • Closely monitor the performance of our technology stack at all levels, ensuring uptime and connection with outside services

The following experience is relevant to us:

We’re looking for an experienced full stack developer to help us build our marketplace platform from MVP to best in class.  We’re looking for someone with exposure to Elixir, as that is our chosen stack, but it is not a requirement that you’ve worked with it for a significant amount of time.  You’ll work in a small, agile team developing features from conception to release, ensuring they solve user problems effectively. Success will mean hitting quarterly product metrics as a team.

  • Full stack development experience, including infrastructure
  • Strong in JavaScript/HTML/CSS
  • Strong in at least one backend language (Elixir, Java, Ruby…)
  • Experience with PostgreSQL (or similar)
  • You love to create fantastic user experiences
  • You thrive in small, agile teams
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentorship skills
  • Experience with open source contributions to major projects is a plus.

Compensation

  • Full Time Market Salary, commensurate with experience
  • Founders Equity vested over three years on the following: 10%/20%/70%
  • Beer!

Location & Work Authorization

Gearflow is committed to operating as a remote-friendly company.  However, given the need for this role to directly collaborate with the Founding team, we require this role to be located in Chicago, IL.  You must be legally authorized to work in the US.
