Venmo was founded on the principles of breaking down the intimidating barriers around financial transactions to make them intuitive, friendly, and even fun. And it worked: people love sending money with Venmo, and we’re growing by leaps and bounds!  

But we’re only just getting started. We want to take that magic of sending money with Venmo and cascade it into every place where people use money. That means connecting people to their money in the most intuitive and fun way possible, then connecting people with each other. Users already love Venmo, but we know there are lots of things we haven’t thought of to make the experience of using Venmo even more delightful and valuable. Engineering at Venmo

Architecture at Venmo 

The network and routing infrastructure architect will be responsible for the design of network and routing architecture that supports Venmo’s backend services.  This will require working very closely with engineering managers and tech leads to extend Venmo’s network infrastructure to additional regions and provide service routing infrastructure to bring Venmo’s services closer to our customers, no matter where they are located.  This individual will work with other architects within infrastructure and across other Venmo domains to define the architecture to support the best payments platform in the world. 

What You’ll Do 

• Work with the CTO, Chief Architect and the other domain Architects to understand overarching business objectives, achieve the groups OKRs and KPIs for each and every quarter. 
• Develop and maintain a cloud infrastructure strategy that is aligned with business objectives. 
• Recognize, validate and evangelize emerging technologies and architectures that align with business objectives. 
• Work with infrastructure technical leads to identify gaps in our architecture and deliver iterative improvements. 
• Work with product owners to establish SLO for the compute, networking and storage solutions that run our applications 
• Collaborate with architects across the organization and other business units across PayPal inc. to design portable and interoperable solutions to support integration of core platform services. 
• Work with engineering teams to maintain and prioritize infrastructure architecture enhancements backlog. 
• Lead by doing and meaningfully contributing to implementations. 
• Coach/mentor technical leads/engineers on design principles. 
• Excellent communication and analytical skills. 
• Demonstrable ability to learn new technologies and process practices. 
• Manage a small team of staff engineers responsible for cloud & infrastructure architecture, and common application platforms 

What We’re Looking For 

• Bachelors and/or Masters in computer science or related field of study 
• 10+ years' experience in software development or a related field 
• 10+ years' experience working hands-on with cloud native applications running at scale 
• Deep hands-on experience with designing and implementing infrastructure to support global-scale services 
• Experience with trustless network principles and enterprise network integrations 
• Hands-on experience with IaaS and PaaS solutions from AWS (or similar cloud provider): 
  • Networking and routing (VPC, Direct Connect, VPN) 
  • Infrastructure as code (AWS CLI, AWS CloudFormation, Terraform, Ansible, Puppet) 
• Hands-on programming and scripting (Lambda, API GW, Python, Java, Bash) 
• Hands-on experience with 
  • Web servers and proxies: Envoy, NGINX 
  • Containers & container orchestration: Docker, Kubernetes, Contour 
• Experience mentoring and developing engineers 
• Experience managing small teams 
• Strong communication skills with the ability to understand and explain technical issues to a non-technical audience 
• AWS Solutions Architect preferred
