As a Manager Application Engineering, you will be responsible for the technical development of software engineering staff within a Discover application development area, while using your technical expertise to drive vision into action and results. This team sits in Discover's Bank Shared Services department with a purpose of creating applications that identifies and reacts to opportunities that arise within the banking applications.
Responsibilities
- Mentor and lead a staff of engineers in both technical and soft skills to craft a team of highly technically competent, consistent, thoughtful and customer-centric technology experts. This includes ensuring the group is adhering to principles of engineering excellence within their technical domain, applying consistency of technical execution, sharing common practices and challenges within the team, and fostering a culture of excellence and continuous learning within the team.
- Leads and utilizes highly technical skills to contribute as an engineer within a product team designing, developing code and maintaining quality technology solutions for a product or set of products including developing own subject matter expertise. Demonstrated experience in multiple software languages, modern software methods, CI/CD, cloud, and automated testing.
- Hire, retain and lead high-functioning, diverse group of engineering professionals, establishing clear objectives and key results, developing consistent set of practices and process across the team, and driving towards resolution of challenging problems. This includes all performance management aspects of leading the engineers including acquiring and providing 360 feedback and administering reviews. Manages software ownership and development from initial concept through continuous improvement.
- Lead and shape the technical vision within their product team and be an essential member of leadership team including acting as a leader in the Discover engineering community affecting and advancing the architecture across the company and ensuring adherence to all regulatory, compliance and audit requirements. This includes defining how technical work should be done, selecting appropriate tools, defining technology, quality, experience and implementation standards and practices within own technical domain.
Minimum Qualifications
At a minimum, here's what we need from you:
- Bachelor's Degree - Computer Science or related
- 6+ years Information Technology, Software Engineering or Related

The following skills/experience are preferred, but we don't expect applications to have expertise in all of them. We're looking for someone motivated to operate in a player/coach role - someone that wants to dig into and learn the technology while also helping to lead a small team of engineers grow in their careers.
- 2+ years people leadership experience
- Experience writing quality code using SOLID principles in Test Driven Development with languages such as Java
- Member of an Agile engineering or development team
- Strong understanding of object-oriented principles
- Experience working with a relational database such as Oracle, MySQL, and Postgres
- Strong experience with CI/CD pipelines. Jenkins or similar; Git/GitHub; Artifactory
- Proven skills in high availability and scalability design, as well as performance monitoring
- Experience developing and implementing API service architecture
- Strong experience in working in a cloud environment such as AWS or PCF
- Strong experience in scripting languages such as Shell/Python/Scala/Java
- Experience with Unix and Linux
- Experience with PLSQL programming
- Understanding of messaging systems like MQ, Rabbit MQ, Kafka, or Kinesis.
- Experience with containerization and associated platforms such as Docker, OCP, Kubernetes
- Regression and maintenance testing for maintenance releases
- Understanding of OWASP principles
- Experience working with Vendors on Issue management, Vulnerabilities, Certificate updates and Audits
- Experience working within a product centric organization
- Strong experience of testing within the full software development lifecycle (Unit, functional, performance & Security)
