The Role
At Morningstar, helping investors is what brings us together and drives our work. We are looking for a Manager of Software Engineering who specializes in creating public web applications to join our team, grow with us, introduce us to new ideas and develop products that empower investor success.
As a Manager of Software Engineering, you will be responsible for high-quality custom software delivery and ensuring modern software development practices are being applied with rigor. You will motivate the team and cultivate a culture of high energy and technical excellence. Establishing a good support infrastructure to handle production issues and being responsive to customer problems is essential to the role. While you understand that guiding the engineering team is important, you're not afraid to "get your hands dirty" and lead problem-solving or innovation efforts at a detailed level.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide holistic oversight of software development and product architecture
- Champion best practices for security, scalability, reliability, reusability, and maintainability
- Partner with Product Management in establishing overall product roadmap, advocating for addressing technical debt
- Partner with Scrum Master in adoption of agile best practices and creation of assets needed to identify challenges impeding the team
- Facilitate discussions and resolve conflicts involving technical approaches, designs, and personnel
- Motivate team and create a strong culture of engineering excellence
- Mentor team, investing in their individual career growth
Qualifications
- 7+ years of proven experience developing commercial quality software products and solutions
- 3+ years of demonstrated experience delivering CMS based public websites
- 2+ years of leading software engineering teams with performance and compensation review responsibilities
- Excellent understanding of any Content Management System
- Good understanding of cloud platforms and SaaS architectures
- Practical knowledge of a variety of technology components and stacks
- Deep understanding of security, scalability, reliability, reusability and maintainability tactics and strategies
- Expertise in agile development practices
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
