Description
The Senior Associate Engineer for Powertrain Controls Simulation works closely with the powertrain teams (power-source teams and transmission teams) as well as the controls teams to simulate machine performance of various electronic controls strategies on a particular machine and/or powertrain configuration. (a few examples include power management, traction control strategies, shift control strategies, and retarding control strategies) Simulating powertrain performance often requires co-simulation between Caterpillar's proprietary 1D performance simulation tool as well as Matlab Simulink.
Job Duties
This job role works closely with the powertrain teams (power-source teams and transmission teams) as well as the controls teams to simulate machine performance of various electronic controls strategies on a particular machine and/or powertrain configuration. (a few examples include traction control strategies, shift control strategies, and retarding control strategies). After completing the various simulations, this role provides recommendations directly to the power-source and transmission teams regarding the optimum control strategy to meet requirements.
Day-to-Day Activities Include:
Communicate with engineers from different teams to determine project objectives and requirements.
Model and analyze machine system performance using dynamics modeling software with special emphasis on power-source (engine, battery, and/or fuel cell) as well as transmission and lower powertrain systems.
Integrate machine, power-source, and transmission controls and analyze results to evaluate various performance metrics (machine performance, fuel efficiency, and reliability).
Optimize control algorithms by validating simulation results against test data and iteratively refining the simulation model.
Modify existing work cycle model to have added functionality to support upcoming programs.
Manage proper documentation of model versions using version control software.
Provide estimates of cost and duration for completing tasks provided by internal design teams.
Report project progress to the team lead and conduct peer review sessions to check results.
Present results and validated models to stakeholders in the form of design reviews.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering with a strong interested in Controls OR Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering with a strong interest and understanding of mechanical systems. Candidate must currently reside in the United States.
Top Candidates will also have:
Advanced Engineering Degree
Experience with co-simulation using Matlab Simulink
Experience using Plant Models
Experience using a 1-D performance simulation tool (AMEsim, GT-Suite, COMSOL, etc.)
Experience writing scripts using Python
