Shiftgig, one of Chicago’s hottest and fastest growing technology companies, is actively seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer in our Chicago office. We are a tech company in a non-tech space and as such, we have a lot of interesting problems to solve. Our architecture is centered around internal and external APIs with consuming clients being our single page applications and native mobile apps.

You love automation and are a jack of all trades. Infrastructure as code and documentation makes you giddy. (Us too, you’re amongst friends). You are a tenacious troubleshooter and bad security practices keep you awake at night. You have experience evaluating new tools and technologies, with good intuition for what is worth time investment.

You enjoy software development and making neat things to help people in their daily lives. The social aspect of our business is very important to our team. You’ve worked in collaborative multifunctional teams to get the job done™, but can equally fly solo when needed. You have a keen sense for how to balance pragmatic, iterative development with the long term vision of a scalable and usable product.

Finally, you are looking to work with a bright team, play with new and challenging technology, solve interesting scaling problems, and generally improve your skills as an engineer.

Day to Day Activities:

Teamwork - DevOps is core to every workflow our engineers use. This means we are often the first point of contact for questions about troubleshooting, performance, security, and deployments. Being a strong team member and communicator is a daily requirement.

Security - Do you love security? We do too! You’ll be responsible for managing access control policies for all our resources, ensuring, daily, that we stay secure and exceed industry standards.

Deployments - We deploy often! You’ll be responsible for ensuring this process is reliable and safe. We are a microservice architecture which means new services roll out regularly.

Development - We mentioned code as documentation and we are serious. We use state management for each server in our fleet, and also to manage our cloud resources. You’ll be responsible for updating and maintaining these codebases, as well as contributing to our roadmap and system architecture choices.

Qualifications:

• 6+ years of Linux systems administration
• Strong development/scripting skills (Python preferred)
• Experience consuming (and preferably building) RESTful APIsPuppet, Chef, Ansible, or similar automation software
• Mediating between system concerns and product/development needs
• Strong communication and experience collaborating between many teams

Bonus Skills:

• Previous experience working as part of an Agile team
• Couchbase, Redis, some form of task runner (*MQ)
• Nginx administration
• AWS interaction, particularly utilizing the API
• Experience with Hashicorp tools, including Packer, Vagrant, Terraform, and particularly
• Consul
• PenTesting
