We all depend on healthcare throughout our lifetimes, for ourselves, and our families and friends, but it is notoriously difficult to navigate and understand. As an industry that comprises 20% of the US economy we think healthcare should work better for all of us. At Collective Health we believe it’s time for a new day in healthcare where as members we are informed and empowered to make the right care choices when the decisions are urgent and critical.

We're modernizing employer-sponsored health insurance and building the first healthcare solution that people actually look forward to interacting with. We believe that with a modern software stack, a small, dedicated team can replace entrenched 5000-person incumbents.

As an engineering team, we believe good code is easy to read and understand. We expect all of our engineers to continually teach as well as learn. As a company, we care about creating a culture of diversity, openness, and transparency, while engaging our intellectual curiosity and problem solving skills. We place a high priority on the overall member experience, including customer support (you shouldn't have to wait on hold ever), legal language (you shouldn't have to be a lawyer to read your health plan), and intuitive web design.

We've got a ton of interesting problems to solve around distributed systems, data pipelines, data analytics and predictions, system reliability, security, privacy, finance, and more. If you're passionate about tackling hard problems while making a real difference in the world, we'd love to talk!

While we are embracing a remote-flexible work week, employees are expected to be within commuting distance of an office. The frequency of in-office days will be determined on a team-by-team basis closer to the reopening of our offices.

What you will do:

  • Become an essential part of a cross-functional team of highly skilled engineers
  • Build software tools to empower internal teams
  • Help push forward the development of the engineering department as a whole
  • Help lead the continued design and development of our Payments platform
  • Support our Financial Management & Payments team in their handling of billions (with a B) of dollars in transactions.

If you’re someone that:

  • Has 8+ years of working as a full stack or backend engineer
  • Is well-versed in technologies such as Java, Spring, & React
  • Prior experience architecting, building, launching and maintaining complex systems
  • Strong cross-team communication and collaboration skills
  • Balances getting things done with making things perfect
  • Takes pride in mentoring other developers
  • Loves working with a team of awesome, collaborative co-workers
  • Likes to be involved in the decision making process, taking into account the needs of our customers as well as our company
  • Any financial experience is a plus, but not required

Our Tech Stack

Our backend services follow microservices architecture using Java and Spring Boot. We use cloud services (AWS) as our backbone, with Kubernetes and Docker for our orchestration. We use PostgreSQL for our databases, and Python & Spark for large scale data workloads. For the frontend, we have a React-driven architecture.

Founded in 2013, Collective Health has created an ecosystem of innovative partners across care and benefits delivery, as well as built a powerful and flexible infrastructure to better enable employees and their families to understand, navigate, and pay for healthcare. By reducing the administrative lift of delivering health benefits, providing an intuitive member experience, and improving health outcomes, the company guides employees toward healthier lives and companies toward healthier bottom lines. Collective Health is headquartered in San Mateo, CA with locations in Chicago, IL, and Lehi, UT. For more information, please visit collectivehealth.com.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. Collective Health is committed to providing support to candidates who require reasonable accommodation during the interview process. If you need assistance, please contact [email protected].

Please note that Collective Health requires all employees to verify receipt of a COVID-19 vaccination or to apply for an exemption from the vaccination requirement based on medical need, a sincerely held religious belief, or a local legal exemption. Candidates are not required to furnish such a verification or to seek an exemption from the verification requirement during the application process but would be asked to do so if they accept an offer.
