We are looking for a dynamic, organized and self-starter engineer to join our Power System & Controls Development team in Mossville, IL.
As an Engine Performance Engineer at Caterpillar, you will serve as an experienced individual contributor on complex and exciting projects. You will have the opportunity to be an integral part of the performance and emissions development of Caterpillar's C175 engines that are utilized in the Electric Power, Machine, and Locomotive industries.
Primary responsibilities will include developing engine systems efficiently with focus on optimizing engine performance and emissions. You will perform engine system calibration that meets customer needs and ensure all applicable emissions regulatory requirements are met.
The candidate will be expected to ensure tests are run on schedule and to provide regular updates to management and technical leadership on the progress of their projects. Documentation of work accomplished along with stakeholder updates will be required on completion of projects. This role will require developing strong peer relationships and collaborate with global teams.
This role will provide an opportunity to grow into an end-to-end engine system development engineer. This will involve utilizing 1-D thermodynamic cycle simulation and other engineering tools to effectively down-select engine combustion recipes.
Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Develop engine ratings that meet emissions and critical customer performance targets
- Perform complex analysis work, identify, and solve challenging problems
- Create, manage, and execute test plans and associated PMO updates
- Conduct 1-D Destiny simulation for recipe selection and ambient capability
- Create and deliver technical reports
- Communicate technical information to customers and internal technical leadership and management
- Mentor and train new engineers on processes/procedures for engine development
- Collaborate with a global team across multiple functional areas
- Perform work in accordance with ISO 17025 processes
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited curriculum
- 5 years of relevant industry or academic experience
- Technical knowledge - experience with engine testing, calibration, simulation, or controls
- Engine development or simulation experience
- Excellent analytical skills
- Self-starter with strong technical leadership skills
- Strong communication skills - Oral and written complemented by the ability to develop/deliver technical presentations
Top Candidates will also have:
- Proficiency with engine rating calibration development
- Expertise in 1-D engine performance and transient simulation tools (Destiny / GT Power)
- The ability to work/lead multiple projects simultaneously and to make sound priority decisions
- Master's degree (or higher) in Engineering from an accredited curriculum
