Senior Unix Administrator

The HFS Infrastructure Team has an immediate and exciting opportunity for an experienced Red Hat Linux & VMware ESX Administrator. You'll be working with a small team of senior staff to build and support the systems which run Northern's high-profile and extremely dynamic Hedge Fund Services organization.

Major Duties

Major initiatives for this year include building a new set of hosts to support new clients, completely overhauling security and reporting, redesigning and documenting our disaster-recovery plan and automating every possible aspect of the environment.

This candidate must be highly self-motivated, able to work cooperatively in a team atmosphere, able to juggle a long-term integration project with daily, time-sensitive tasks, and willing to perform off-hours work and on-call duties.

Other specific responsibilities include:

• Write new data collection modules and graphs using OpenNMS
• Compile and install open-source software
• Assist HFS Application support staff with OS problems, permissions, software installation, etc.
• Determine root cause of hung and crashed systems
• Document common tasks and train operations staff
• Design solutions for new or unusual security requirement
• Write scripts to extract data from configurations or logs and summarize reports
• Re-engineer disaster recovery for lower RTO

Experience

The ideal candidate would have 5-10 years of Linux experience but must be comfortable integrating across VMware virtualization, network, storage, database and Microsoft Windows technologies. This candidate must be highly self-motivated, able to work cooperatively in a team environment and able to juggle a long-term integration project with daily, time-sensitive tasks.

They should have extensive experience with troubleshooting and root-cause analysis of complex, highly-interconnected systems. Previous experience with trading systems would be beneficial.

Knowledge/Skills

• • • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, 6, and 7 system administration
    • Basic VMware administration, including some Windows and AD
    • In-depth performance troubleshooting across CPU, memory, I/O and network
    • Capacity planning on both physical and VMware systems
    • Deep experience with scripting and automation
• • • Fiber-channel storage and the Linux Logical Volume Manager
    • NetApp with NFSv4 and ACLs
    • NFS automounter
    • Strong Unix filesystem skills
• • • Strong knowledge of security exposures, practices and tools (including SElinux, iptables ACLs, password vaulting, activity logging)
    • IP networking and troubleshooting with tcpdump, traceroute, etc.
    • Understanding of routing, switching, VLANs and multicast
    • Ability to design and specify firewall and load-balancer requirements
