Software Engineering Manager - Edge Services
About the Role:
The transportation industry has no shortage of complex problems requiring creative solutions to scale efficiently. In this role, you will manage the team responsible for building and operating the software that ties together 3rd party tooling and our customer’s IT systems with Mastery’s. You will work closely with Mastery IT, Security, and software engineering teams to develop secure scalable solutions that allow all these parties to communicate.
Responsibilities:
- Manage a software team responsible for designing, developing, and supporting internal client libraries to be used by software engineering teams, Mastermind’s Single Sign on system and homegrown solution for integrating Mastery systems with 3rd party SaaS tooling
- Collaborate with engineering and development teams to evaluate and identify optimal cloud, and event driven solutions
- Collaborate with the Cloud Engineering team to produce tooling solutions to enable software engineering teams
- Regularly reviewing existing systems and make recommendations for improvements
- Conduct bi-weekly 1:1s with all direct reports while leading and growing a team of Software Engineers and mentor your employees to improve performance and develop higher level skills
- Handle planning and breaking down large projects into milestones and identifying risks and dependencies while being responsible for architectural design and influence
- Execute against approved daily, weekly, and monthly plans and keep leadership informed of work status/progress
- Participate in goal setting and ensure that members of the team understand Team Goals, Strategies and Priorities
Requirements:
- Experience focused on cloud architecture, software, operations, DevOps, or administration
- Some experience with cloud automation and scripting (e.g., CloudFormation, Terraform, Ansible)
- Experience in containerization and management tools such as Kubernetes or Docker Swarm
- Experience in at least one or more programming languages, (e.g., node.js, Java, .Net)
- Experience with continuous integration, delivery, desired state processes tools and constraints
- Some experience with GraphQL and API Gateways
- Passion for building a scalable backend architecture that supports a rapid growing user base with a proven understanding of system and API design
- Ability to evaluate and communicate different engineering solutions and trade-offs in an Agile environment focused on delivery of quality software
- Strong communication, with the ability to explain complex technical problems to non-technical audiences and the ability to translate customer requirements to technical designs
- Ability to identify strengths and weaknesses of individuals to maximize team effectiveness; provide guidance to individuals when needed for coaching or mentoring
- Ability to mediate between competing technical priorities; align priorities and goals through collaboration with technical leads and product managers
- Effectively communicate between teams and within teams to drive alignment and increase effectiveness on delivery
- Excellent analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills with a mindset of automate everything, with experience demonstrating this
Preferred:
- Proven working experience with infrastructure as code building CI/CD pipelines
- Well-organized project skills. Spreadsheets are your friend, but so are Kanban boards and ticket queues
- Roll up your sleeves and take on development work, when necessary
- Experience with SQL and RDBMS, NoSQL technologies a plus
- Preferred AWS, Azure, GCP cloud computing certifications or equivalent coursework
