Job Description
Historically managing costs within one’s data center was a relatively straightforward exercise. You had to project out your infrastructure needs 3-5 years, the lifespan of a deprecating asset. The upside of this model was that it was easy to project and control one’s costs, the downsides are obvious and hence the explosion of public cloud consumption. The incredible uptake of public cloud has moved many established companies from a model where spend was bridled by long provisioning cycles to a model where increases in consumption are instantaneously and potentially unbounded. This often has resulted in poorly thought-out planning, rightsizing and ultimately responsible spending. In this senior leadership role in the Enterprise Architecture Technology Strategy organization, you will help drive the strategy around financial management of our cloud solutions, which will include all aspects from tagging, reporting, charge-back as well as observability of usage and rightsizing recommendations. Additionally, you will be responsible for establishing our green program, aimed at reducing Discover’s carbon footprint.
At your core you are an Architect that has demonstrated the engineering and architecture skills necessary to help drive the Technology Strategy for Discover. While the role will require leading a small group of architects, this is not a hierarchal management role, it is a technical role that demands that the candidate have had exposure to a wide range of technologies. You will be working in a highly collaborative environment with business partners, senior architects, product owners and the application development community to help deliver a strategy around financial management. Therefore, you will have the unique skill to gain the influence over the technical and business teams as the chief domain architect. You are someone with advance skills around public cloud providers, Kubernetes and general understanding of cloud services. You should also have a passion for the environment, ensuring Discover is a good environmental steward.
The Technical Architecture Manager is a master architect that is responsible for managing a small group of architects. They are responsible for driving strategic technology initiatives, aligning the organization to delivery of critical capabilities to support the development and analytics communities.
What You’ll Do:
- Lead the creation of technical strategy for the overall Digital Sustainability program and work with product owners to establish implementation roadmaps
- Create and staff the subdomains within Digital Sustainability pillar
- Lead the creation of reference/solution architectures for development community, establishing best practices
- Work with stakeholders on tagging/labeling strategy across all cloud resources
- Execution of proof of concepts where required in support of technology strategy
- Mentorship of other architects within the Digital Sustainability pillar
- Work with executives on establishing green program and marketing surrounding Discover’s efforts
- Marketing and communication of technology strategy for the Digital Sustainability
How You’ll Do It
- Establishes & owns the overall strategy for the product area represented. Works with architects to identify & evaluate capabilities required to support business, ensuring alignment to overall strategy. Works with product owners, socializing strategies, aiding in generation of roadmaps. Produces reference and solution architectures for the development of community. Works with the innovation team to bring capabilities to market.
- Provides leadership and mentors architects, creates opportunities to highlight the team through external speaking engagements, blogs, etc. Manages and champions organizational changes.
- Communicates implications of design decisions, technology costs, benefits, and implementation requirements to executive leadership.
Qualifications You’ll Need
The Basics:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology
- 12+ years’ experience Engineering/Architecture across numerous technology domains or related
- 2+ years’ experience with Direct Line People Management or equivalent experience leading teams through large technology initiatives
Bonus Points If You Have:
- 10+ years as technical lead or architect composing system designs/architectures
- 6+ years performing engineering work, across multiple domains
- General understanding of Cloud Management Financial Observability products, e.g., Cloudhealth, Apptio, Spot, Turbonomics
- Good understanding of AI/ML capabilities
- 2+ years with Kubernetes
- 4+ years with public clouds such as AWS, GCP or Azure
- General understanding of the public cloud capability domains such as databases
- Excellent communication & collaboration skills
