About Kin:

At Kin, we’re looking for self-motivated thinkers ready to make a change for our customers. We value tackling challenges and breaking down walls – but being chill about it.

Kin Insurance is an insurtech startup that sells affordable, user-friendly homeowners insurance. Unlike many startups that gather users and figure out how to be profitable later, we are selling a product that homeowners need and depend on now. We’re innovating in an industry largely untouched by tech, so we are always thinking big.

We believe autonomy is key to job satisfaction, which is why we say the person closest to the problem should solve it. It’s also why we offer unlimited vacation time: we trust in our team to manage their own projects and time. If you want the chance to develop your skills, work with some of the best minds in the industry, and see what you’re really capable of, come learn and grow with us.

So, what’s the role?

We’re looking for a UI engineer to join our design team and help bring ideas, prototypes, and designs to life. This role will work closely with the design team to build fast, easy, and beautiful software for our customers and internal sales reps to use. The UI engineer will own the entire front-end design system, which helps enable all developers to build a pixel-perfect UI.

A day in the life could include:

  • Working primarily with the design team, but also working closely with our larger tech team – including product managers and software engineers
  • Owning and managing our custom CSS framework
  • Serving as an advocate for front-end best practices
  • Building reusable components within a robust design system
  • Translating requirements and mock-ups into fully-functional user interfaces
  • Updating design system documentation with new components
  • Focusing both on our customer-facing funnel and our bespoke policy administration system used by our internal operations team
  • Writing and pushing production-ready HTML, CSS, and JS directly within our Rails application
  • Ensuring the interface is usable across a wide variety of device types and sizes

You have the right skills if you:

  • Are a developer or front-end designer with an expert-level knowledge of HTML and CSS
  • Have an exceptional eye for detail and passion for usability
  • Are comfortable working within a Ruby on Rails application and using Git
  • Are highly organized and able to build and maintain UI elements from scratch
  • Have experience building and maintaining pixel-perfect designs
  • Strive for pixel perfection and have high standards for how implemented designs look and function
  • Have experience building interfaces that will work across multiple devices types and sizes
  • Are extremely proficient in CSS properties and transitions
  • Are comfortable writing custom JavaScript solutions rather than relying on existing frameworks
  • Are excited to create reusable code across consistent user experiences
  • Enjoy being a liaison between design and back-end engineering

Oh, and don’t worry, we’ve got you covered

  • Being in the insurance industry, we recognize the importance of comprehensive benefits for you and your family. That’s why we provide a variety of options and coverage levels to customize a plan that’s right for you.
  • Medical
  • Dental
  • Vision
  • Commuter Benefit Plans
  • Flexible PTO
  • Flex Spending Accounts
  • 401k
  • Disability insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Onsite gym membership
  • Company provided lunch several times a month
  • Rotating option of snacks, daily
  • Sodas, unlimited flavored waters, coffee
  • These are just some of the benefits and perks we provide!
