The Application Engineer influences and drives Discover's strategic technology decisions. They drive Discover's strategic technology decisions and are recognized outside of Discover as a thought leader.
Responsibilities:
- Researches new technology opportunities and how they can be used to add technical capabilities at Discover.
- Drives strategic technology decisions based on collaboration with a board field of experts outside of Discover.
- Contributes to the external image of Discover Technology as a desired workplace to learn technology best practices.
- Recognized outside of Discover as a thought leader and participates in internal and external communities.
- Shapes learning paths for Discover engineers by bringing what they learn back to Discover so everyone can benefit from their experiences.
- Always learning and bringing new and advanced skills to the team
- Contributes beyond current role, is not constrained by title or team.
- Design/Architecture Skills - able to design as well as provide consultation to others, identifies bottlenecks and recommends solutions
- Contributes to the external image of Discover Technology as a desired workplace to learn technology best practices
- Consistently acts in a consulting role across multiple teams (not just own)Strong mentorship skills
- Recommends new technologies, able to teach/train across the organization, develops with future state in mind.
- Active participant in external tech communities"
- Creates opportunities for Discover Technology teams to learn industry best practices
Minimum Qualifications
At a minimum, here's what we need from you:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Informatics, Information Security, Information Technology or related
- 8+ years of experience in Information Technology, (Software) Engineering or related field
Preferred Qualifications
If we had our say, we'd also look for:
- Experience recommending new technologies
- Teach/train across the organization, develops with future state in mind.
- Experience working with relational or no-SQL databases
- Experience with Java and Spring boot
- Experience with REST/API design and development
- Cloud based experience
- Ability to build perspective and influence decision making based on wisdom in the field
- Ability to develop novel approaches to solve problems in new ways.
- Can cascade the role from the trenches to the board room - Can translate technical to executive summary
- Has published works or industry contributions, is often a speaker at industry conferences.
- Has passion for continuous improvement and seeks out ways to drive change
- Focuses on Design and architecture of solutions, clears blockers provides consulting to efforts.
- Strong in Agile, CI/CD, Devops, Testing, quality control"
- Strong leadership skills
- Ability to present complex problems in a simple manner
- Passion for Learning, Must Have Self-Taught Skills Gained Through Online Study, Training Courses and Most Importantly Through Experimentation
- Strives for Continuous Improvement

Compensation:
The base pay for this position generally ranges between $125,500.00 to $211,500.00. Additional incentives may be provided as part of a market competitive total compensation package. Factors, such as but not limited to, geographical location, relevant experience, education, and skill level may impact the pay for this position.
