Our organization is closely following the evolving COVID-19 pandemic and will share updates on our 2022 return to the office plan as soon as any decisions are made.


Home Chef is seeking a Payroll Manager who enjoys partnering with internal customers to develop payroll solutions that balance the need for compliance with the need for speed and agility. The Payroll Manager will report to the Controller, and be responsible for managing the end to end payroll process. Individual should have a keen eye for identifying and implementing scalable payroll solutions that can evolve with a rapidly growing U.S. based employee population consisting of both salaried and hourly employees.

Manage the payroll process on a weekly basis including reviewing and reconciling all inputs and final outputs:

  • Compile forms and other payroll information submitted by HR and employees and pay employees accordingly
  • Manage timekeeping data and system
  • Ensure final paycheck compliance in a variety of U.S. states, including California
  • Reconcile payroll data using Kronos and ADP and corrects discrepancies

Maintain the integrity and accuracy of employee data:

  • Consistently run audit reports and ensures that inaccurate data is corrected
  • Partner with HR teams to maintain effective payroll processes through training, documentation, and coaching ensuring timely and accurate employee data 
  • Manage PTO accruals for hourly and salaried employee populations in both ADP and Kronos

Research and Implementation of multi-state and local tax processing requirements:

  • Provide counsel to HR and leadership to drive compliance of local tax processing as Home Chef’s geographic footprint expands
  • Work closely with Kroger and Legal to apply for and manage tax jurisdictions
  • Create and maintain tax codes and filing status in ADP

Drive process improvement projects to reduce manual payroll efforts and enhance end-user interaction with Payroll systems:

  • Determine how to set up and implement new policies and procedures determined by HR or relevant labor law
  • Identify and implement process improvement projects that reduce opportunity for human error, enhance payroll system interface for end-users, and create efficiency in processing payroll cycles 
  • Look for opportunities to scale systems and processes to ensure the payroll infrastructure evolves along with the business

Administer Kronos training:

  • Partner closely with HR to identify and execute training opportunities to ensure all people managers have the tools and education they need to support timely and accurate timecard submission in Kronos for hourly employee population of ~1500 and growing 
  • Adjust Kronos training manuals for employees and managers to reflect changes in procedure
  • Record training instructions for employees as needed

Manage quarter-end and year-end payroll activities:

  • Ensure that ADP has proper documentation to accurately file federal, state and local taxes
  • Audit quarter-end and year-end reports for inaccuracies

Qualifications:

  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) preferred
  • Completion of a four-year degree program in a related field
  • 5+ years of payroll and payroll tax experience
  • 3+ years of manager experience
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local tax and labor laws and reporting requirements
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Comfort with enterprise systems and data management
  • Experience with Kronos and/or ADP a plus
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Excel
  • Proficiency in all other MS Office applications
  • Self-starter, initiates as opposed to reacts with a proven “take-charge” record of accomplishment
  • Strong work ethic; e.g. “roll-up your sleeves” leader
