MANAGER, TAX (WEALTH MANAGEMENT, PERSONAL TAX SERVICES)

The Global Client Tax Services Group performs tax return preparation in connection with a diverse client base, including U.S. and non-U.S. corporations, affluent individuals and families, foundations, endowments, trusts, and estates. This leadership position will primarily focus on U.S. individual income tax (Form 1040) and gift tax (Form 709) compliance and consulting. Candidate will accomplish results through the management of approximately one dozen professionally licensed tax professionals.
Major Duties
• Ensure the accurate preparation and timely delivery of IRS Forms 1040 and 709 for clients of Northern Trust's Personal Tax Services ("PTS") department.
• Oversee the onboarding of new PTS clients, reviewing prior year returns, assessing risk to Northern Trust and/or "fit" to our client service model.
• Oversee and manage billing for tax services, reviewing our fee schedule on a periodic basis
• Represent clients in federal or state examinations of returns, monitor notices received and responses to same.
• Ensure changes in compliance and regulatory requirements are integrated into policies, programs, and processes.
• Drive process improvements; enable streamlining to achieve operational efficiencies and the development of performance metrics.
• Present and articulate complex tax matters to clients and cross-functional audiences.
• Supervise, develop, mentor, and train staff.
• Participate in industry forums on matters of U.S. income & gift tax reporting and contribute to initiatives aimed at making tax rules clearer and more easily manageable.
• Manage quarterly and annual payroll reporting requirements for certain relationships (as needed).
• Oversee/administer use of the EFTPS system for remittance of federal payments for PTS clients.
Knowledge and Skills
• Extensive experience with preparation of income tax returns for high-net-worth individuals and beneficiaries of trusts, including any required gift tax returns
• Knowledge of CCH Axcess Tax and Axcess Practice strongly preferred
• Knowledge of Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE Trust Tax (for sourcing of 1099s, K-1s, and grantor letters) is a plus
• Experience preparing tax returns and meeting multiple filing deadlines
• Ability to research and interpret U.S. tax rules as set forth in the Internal Revenue Code, U.S. Treasury Regulations, and other IRS guidance
• Strong familiarity with income tax filing requirements for individuals across the United States
• Familiarity with US income tax filing requirements for US citizens living abroad (chiefly Canada, the United Kingdom, and France)
• Excellent oral and written communication skills needed to explain complex tax technical requirements to internal stakeholders and sophisticated clients
• Strong knowledge of gift tax, estate tax, and generation-skipping transfer tax for US residents
• Experience in Form 1099 tax reporting, in grantor-type tax treatment for trusts, and in preparing and reviewing guardianship tax returns
• Strong commitment to process improvement and controls through utilizing digitation tools
• Move easily between big picture thinking and managing relevant detail
• Experience with Microsoft SharePoint/ PowerBI reporting tools is a plus
The successful candidate will benefit from having the following competencies:
• CPA or Enrolled Agent (EA) designation required
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university and J.D., LL.M. in Taxation, and/or Master's in Taxation (MST) preferred
• Major financial institution or accounting firm background required
• A minimum of 5 years of relevant tax preparation/review experience required
• Prior tax management experience strongly preferred
• Active participation in professional organizations such as the AICPA, American Bar Association, and/or state societies preferred
• Demonstrated history of service, expertise, and integrity
