Accounting Intern

The Accounting Intern will work closely with the Senior Accountant and VP of Finance gaining invaluable hands-on experience in corporate accounting at our rapidly growing downtown Chicago office. The Accounting Intern will participate in our month-end close process, performing a variety of duties such as the preparation of journal entries, identifying and recording of accruals, entering vendor invoices, reconciling cash, compiling audit requests and other special projects as assigned.
This is a high-visibility role interacting with stakeholders at all levels of the company. The ideal candidate is an extrovert who enjoys solving problems, demonstrates a high-level of integrity and takes ownership of his or her work.
This is a part-time position, approximately 10-20 hours per week, with flexibility in scheduling due to class schedule or other needs, with the ability to be up to a 40-hour per week internship during school breaks.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Accounting
- Month-end close duties:
- Reconcile cash balances.
- Record and reconcile corporate credit card charges for the period.
- Review and approve employee expense reports and upload to QuickBooks.
- Review the pre-close Income Statement, identify accruals, prepare journal entries and supporting workpapers.
- Prepare narratives describing significant variances for the period.
- Enter vendor invoices and other tasks as assigned.
- Special Projects and audit responsibilities:
- Reconcile student status’s per QuickBooks to Velocify, investigate and explain discrepancies.
- Prepare two summer invoices from start to finish.
- Update vendor system with missing details.
- Pull and compile data as assigned for the annual audit.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE an equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
- Must be pursing an undergraduate degree with a major concentration in Accountancy holding a minimum GPA of 3.0 or above.
- Completion of Intermediate Financial Accounting I (or equivalent) with a grade of B or above.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Google suite of products (Google Calendar, Gmail, Google Drive)
- Strong working-knowledge of Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, IF statements and lookup formulas) highly preferred. Experience with Microsoft Access a plus.
- Experience in QuickBooks preferred but not required.
- Must be able to communicate professionally via email, phone and in person with both employees and outside vendors.
