Department OverviewWhat is MSI Innovation and Design?
We are embedded in the Chief Technology Office and innovation engine for Motorola Solutions. We are user-focused and outcome-driven, identifying problems and creating solutions based on research and engagement with our customers.
Considering our customers' unique "jobs to be done" is a foundational principle of Innovation Design Team. Based on their needs, we create solutions by applying our experience in user experience and design, advanced wireless communications and solutions, cloud & mobile application architecture, cybersecurity, user & human factors research, imaging, analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI).
Software and hardware technology and platform solutions developed by Innovation Design and the CTO form the basis of many products and solutions offered by Motorola Solutions.
Innovation Design and The CTO: A brief history

The Innovation and Design Team is a cross functional group within Motorola Solutions Chief Technology Office. User Centered Design and Research is the foundation to create the next generation of End to End solutions for our mission critical customers and users. The team consists of Industrial Design, UI/UX, Research, and Technologist who design for diverse and challenging markets. Police, Fire and Industrial user groups all have very distinct and tangible design problems; whether it’s the dirt, grime and high noise of industrial environments, gloves and turnout gear for Fire or managing intense cognitive loads during police action. Our team is exploring, testing and designing for emerging technologies that will define the next generation commercial, public safety and first responder communication solutions. Your designs will enable a Use Experience and total solution that can save lives in moments that matter.
Job Description
Are you interested in positively impacting users’ lives with your work? We are a small highly collaborative team using social sciences and user centered design to address a global customer base. We tackle complicated challenges and transforming them into meaningful and critical experiences. Our world is changing faster than ever with lots of ambiguity, and speed. Users are in the center of our universe and we only build for their needs and wants. We know the value of good design and we insist on it. Our primary customer base includes Public Safety, Enterprise, and Business- products include portable and mobile communication and data devices.
Creative Tool Kit:
Candidate will refine their ability to develop ideas into design solutions based on an understanding of end user requirements. Shadowing design leads collaborating with marketing and engineering to assure successful implementation of industrial designs. Follow up with manufacturing and production processes as required. Integrate effectively into a multidisciplinary group that includes cognitive and behavioral scientists, interaction designers, and human factors engineers and deliver to strict deadlines in a fast paced environment.
Desired Skills/Qualifications:
Strong 2-D visualization skills are necessary such as sketching, Illustrator and Photoshop software. An ability to develop 3-D databases in Solid Works, Pro E and Alias, Rhino or other similar tools is also required. An ability to appreciate and work with human factors specialists is also a baseline in this position. A wide level of sensitivity to culture and end users should complement a strong core knowledge in design.
Scope of responsibilities:
Intern will support shipping portfolio and participate in conceptual exercises candidates will assist lead designers in problem resolution utilizing sketches, illustrations and 3 models. Participation in creative exercises will require understanding and creation of uses cases, user personas and experiences.

- Must be enrolled in an bachelors degree from an accredited industrial design program with a graduation date on or after December 2021
