Role Description:

Oak Street Health is seeking an experienced Assistant General Counsel, Employment Law to support our rapid growth. The candidate will join the Oak Street Health Legal and Compliance team and will interact with and support various groups across the company, with a primary focus on employment law and physician relations. The position will report to the Chief Legal Officer (CLO) and regularly partner with Human Resources and other Legal Team members to provide employment related legal services. This position will have primary responsibility for Oak Street Health's employment law matters. The Assistant General Counsel, Employment Law will be dedicated to providing legal support including, but not limited to, day-to-day employment counseling on a wide variety of matters, wage and hour compliance support, managing immigration matters, benefits support, and risk management guidance. Provide legal training to members of management and business partners. This position can be performed remotely in part; must be willing to travel periodically to Chicago, IL for in person meetings.

The Assistant General Counsel, Employment Law manages outside counsel and, as the legal function grows, legal and paraprofessional staff and will provide input on departmental performance metrics, capacity planning, budgeting, assignment of work, and process improvement.

Core Responsibilities:

Oak Street Health seeks an experienced attorney with strong expertise in employment law. Additional responsibilities include:

  • The ability to develop and maintain positive and effective relationships with business partners at all levels across the enterprise as well as with colleagues on the Legal team is a must. Ideal candidates for this role will have in-house or law firm experience supporting health care, professional services and/or retail clients, strong business acumen, excellent counseling skills, the ability to take a strategic and business-focused approach to complex employment issues and an entrepreneurial mindset. This position will afford invaluable experience within a fast-paced and dynamic organization.
  • Develop the position of the employment law function as a strategic adviser, building engagement with the Human Resources leadership team and business partners.
  • Provide expert, ethical and pragmatic advice on a wide range of employee relations matters, including disciplinary issues, benefits and policy compliance.
  • Proactively identify arising risk areas and develop risk mitigation solutions.
  • Manage all formal and informal employment related claims (EEOC or otherwise) and litigation.
  • Create, conduct and implement training modules on a variety of labor and employment-related topics.
  • Support HR policy development and roll out and create and maintain relevant precedents across multiple states in which Oak Street Health operates..
  • Draft, negotiate, interpret and enforce employment contracts and other employment-related agreements.
  • Ensure awareness and compliance with federal, state and local labor and employment laws.

What are we looking for?

• J.D. Degree required. Must be a member in good standing of the Bar of at least one of the 50 states. Strong academic credentials.

• 5+ years of employment law experience at a law firm or in-house required. In-house experience at a public company is a significant plus.

  • A sound understanding of all aspects of employment law and an ability to apply that knowledge pragmatically in a commercial environment
  • Experience in developing policies and procedures for ensuring corporate compliance required

• Experience interacting regularly with senior business leadership.

• Detail and solutions oriented.

• Independent and comfortable operating on a semi-autonomous basis.

• Must be willing to actively engage and dive into projects; this is not just a management role.

• Ability to be practical and display good business judgment.

• Comfortable working in a fast-paced high activity environment.

• Strong ability to influence, provide point of view and to listen.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Ability to effectively work with various departments and levels (including senior management) and manage cross functional teams.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality and properly treat sensitive information.

• Ability to handle ambiguity and juggle many matters at once.

• Must be willing to travel periodically to Chicago, IL for meetings.
