Job Summary
Under broad supervision of the department director, provides legal support to the Legal Services Department Bill Review Team. Reviews legal invoices from counsel for reasonableness and compliance with organizational billing requirements. Reviews and responds to law firm appeals to adjustments made to invoices. May participate in on-site bill review audits. May deal with highly-sensitive information. A minimum of 2-3 years insurance defense litigation experience is highly preferred.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
- Reviews legal bills for compliance with Billing Requirements and Guidelines, as well as reasonableness and necessity of fees and expenses, and appropriateness of rate structure. The review process requires identifying billing discrepancies that may require adjustments. The adjustments, when appropriate, are made via both a manual tracking system and electronically using a Matter Management system/e-billing tool. The reviews are to be prioritized to meet deadlines for bill review completion. Complex issues are to be escalated to Legal Services Director for guidance. Makes decisions within specific limits of authority to finalize and approve for payment assigned legal invoices.
- Collaborates with claim staff and management to ensure appropriate level of understanding of claim for effective review of invoices. Notifies and discusses with claims any irregular billing patterns observed. Reviews claim notes to ensure understanding of claim to achieve effective bill review. Communicates and negotiates with law firms and outside cost administrators regarding billing questions, issues, and disputes.
- Reviews and responds to law firm appeals to invoice adjustments, including review of responsive narratives and supporting documents provided by the firms, review of claim notes, and communications with internal claim clients to make independent determinations as to whether or not to reconsider adjustments made to invoices.
- Collaborates and calibrates with other bill review team members via regularly-held department meetings and frequent informal discussions to ensure consistency of review throughout the organization.
- May participate in special projects such as on-site law firm audits, requiring good understanding of the underlying claims and effective communication with both outside business partners and internal claim clients.
May perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills Knowledge & Abilities
Strong Knowledge of the theories principles practices and procedures of litigation management within an insurance organization.
Solid verbal and written communication negotiation and presentation skills.
Ability to exercise independent judgment and to work with and maintain confidential and sensitive information.
Solid analytical and problem solving skills. Ability to recognize and address ambiguous situations and issues.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business−related software ie TeamConnect or other case management software.
Acts with a sense of urgency to advance priorities of the client/organization.

Raises expectations of self by continuously learning and broadening industry and technical skills.
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree with JD and admission to the bar of at least one state. May require specific state license.
Typically a minimum of three years of legal experience in claims and/or law firm is desired.
May require specific technical/functional area legal experience.
