Job Description
The successful candidate will support a variety of stakeholders across Motorola Solutions, Inc. (“MSI”) and its affiliates, serving as primary counsel for global intellectual property matters, as well as leading MSI’s worldwide trademark and brand practice. The IP Counsel will partner closely with other members of the IP and commercial legal teams, together with senior leaders within the business units, to provide counsel on a variety of new and existing product offerings. The IP Counsel provides pragmatic, day-to-day and strategic advice to technology leaders, with a view towards minimizing IP risks while advancing business goals and initiatives. Additionally, the IP Counsel serves as a strategic partner to business leaders, identifying opportunities to leverage global IP assets for business advantage.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide guidance to internal business teams on a wide range of intellectual property issues and opportunities.
Review, negotiate, draft, interpret and analyze IP elements of MSI commercial agreements, including sales contracts, procurement contracts and RFP documents.
Advise multiple internal stakeholders across product development, accounting, finance, and procurement throughout the product development cycle (research / ideation / creation / launch / market strategy) on a broad range of intellectual property issues, including patent protection, software licensing and brand strategies.
Assist the commercial legal team by providing guidance relative to risks associated with IP indemnity provisions, software licensing terms and trademark usage.
Supervise staff in the areas of trademark portfolio management, software licensing and global brand protection.
Oversee the brand enforcement program using internal and external resources.
DESIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Strength in assessing complex product offerings (e.g., cloud computing, SaaS, data analytics) and related commercial agreements; identifying and solving potential IP issues, particularly in the areas of IP ownership, indemnification and software licensing.
Ability to engage individuals and teams to ensure timely project completion and optimal client outcomes.
Comfortable working with senior business and technical leaders to understand their unique needs, developing action plans and affirming progress throughout the process.
Leadership qualities needed to manage legal professionals, stressing teamwork and collaboration, role-modeling best practices and developing their skills to meet the needs of the business.
Preferred Skills:
Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline, preferably engineering or computer science.
Juris doctor and admission to the bar in at least one state.
Admission to, and current good-standing with, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
7+ years in the tech industry, with experience in telecom, networking or communications preferred.
