This position reports to the Global Head of Litigation, Investigations and Regulatory Enforcement. The Litigation, Investigations and Regulatory Enforcement group has a global mandate, advising all Northern Trust entities on an array of legal matters, including pre-litigation business problems, corporate and representative litigation, government inquiries, cyber, privacy and internal investigations. This role will support the group's efforts on general corporate litigation, complex subpoena and discovery responses, regulatory inquiries and litigation-related special projects.

Major Duties:

1. Responsible for supporting pending and threatened litigation, new or ongoing investigations and a variety of regulatory enforcement matters. This includes proactively managing-in coordination with senior internal counsel-all aspect of a matter such as developing and implementing strategy, conducting early matter assessments, reviewing and editing outside counsel work product and trial support.

2. Oversees internal discovery efforts, including coordination with internal e-discovery team, to meet the needs of the external trial team with regard to document identification, searching, collection, review and production. Edits and conforms draft discovery responses with Northern Trust's search and collection capabilities. A successful candidate will understand written and electronic discovery well-enough and will learn Northern Trust's data map well enough to, for example, spot problems with discovery suggestions from outside or opposing counsel and advise senior internal counsel accordingly.

3. Supports Northern Trust's response to subpoenas, levies, garnishments and other legal process, including negotiating responses, preserving objections and evaluating draft productions.

4. Responsible for creating and maintaining tracking tools and reports produced by the Litigation, Investigations and Regulatory Enforcement group.

5. Drafts, facilitates and implements legal hold notices.

6. Conducts complex research and prepares summaries of findings.

7. Responsible for coordinating, collaborating with and managing outside counsel and other legal and forensic vendors.

8. Provides assistance in responding to regulatory, auditor and law enforcement inquiries and complaints.

9. Prepares employees for interviews, depositions and trial/hearing testimony with assistance from outside or senior internal counsel.

10. Reviews draft responses to client requests for proposals to advise the business unit about identification and management of legal risks.

11. Handles assorted miscellaneous litigation matters.

12. Interacts with partners (e.g., relationship managers, Risk/Compliance, Tax, Legal Department, Human Resources) or external parties (e.g., law enforcement, regulators, other financial institutions, investigations staff) in the course of information gathering, as appropriate.

Experience:• Must have a valid state license to practice law.• Must have at least two years of experience with complex commercial litigation. An ideal candidate would have experience advising financial institutions or other highly regulated clients.• Must have some experience handling subpoena and discovery responses with minimal supervision, including document identification, collection, and production. An ideal candidate also will have familiarity with legal holds, document management applications (such as Everlaw, Relativity, Concordance, Nebula, etc.) and electronic document sharing (such as FTP sites).• This is a hybrid role located Chicago, Illinois and will work out of Northern Trust's corporate headquarters in downtown Chicago at least 2 days a week.

The position requires exceptional organization and communication skills to work effectively and cooperatively with internal and external clients, management and staff and to coordinate business functions with other departments. The role requires collaboration, confidence, insightfulness and tech-savvy. The candidate must have strong analytical abilities, judgment and prioritization skills.
