Job Description

We are looking for a Director of Business Operations to support Etsy as we grow and open a Regional Engineering & Product Development hub in Mexico City, Mexico. The hub will play a key role in unlocking sources of product and engineering talent to contribute to Etsy’s strategy and enable Etsy to invest and scale for the long term!

As the Director of Business Operations, Contract, you will be responsible for all operational aspects of establishing our new hub in Mexico. You will partner with internal operating teams across Etsy to create and execute on a project plan that includes: local entity registration, employment processes and procedures, tax and banking, real estate, IP registration and more. You are someone that has a track record of establishing a business presence in Mexico and loves building lasting value on behalf of International companies? Please note: This is a contract position located in Mexico City, Mexico with the possibility of converting to full-time, reporting to the VP of Workplace and Strategic Sourcing.

This is a contract position located in Mexico City, Mexico for a role that will eventually be a full-time need of our organization. We will hire this person on a temp to perm basis. This role will report to the VP of Workplace and Strategic Sourcing.

About the role:

  • Responsible for identifying and project managing many cross functional workstreams associated with establishing Etsy’s local entity in Mexico.

  • Coordinate with legal, compliance, tax and accounting teams, manage the process of incorporating the new entity; registration in public registry and with tax authorities; IP registration; obtaining state and local permits; and establishing local bank accounts.

  • Partner with HR, legal and Internal IT, ensure all policies and procedures are developed to support a local employee presence, including an employee handbook, payroll, benefits, new-hire training, etc.

  • Partner with Workplace and Internal IT, to lead selecting an office location, negotiating a lease, managing the office build out, and partnering with local vendors for office services.

  • Negotiate competitively-termed vendor agreements to provide contractors and grow full time employees to build Etsy’s new office.

  • Ensure values alignment around employment practices and diversity and inclusion efforts of vendors.

  • Manage ongoing relationships with vendors, ensuring they are meeting Etsy’s service and quality expectations and that the terms reflect our partnership needs.

  • In partnership with HR and Legal, ensure success at the point of contractor transfer to employee status by structuring competitive employment packages.

  • Serve as point person for financial planning, reporting, and forecasting associated with Etsy’s Mexico operations, in coordination with the relevant internal teams.

  • Work with internal partners to recruit and provide oversight to local G&A teams, including: HR, Recruiting, Workplace, IT and AP.


  • 10+ years of experience with progressive responsibilities related to establishing and managing international business presence in Mexico.

  • Native Spanish speaker, fluent in English.

  • Strong understanding of the Mexican tech market, real estate sector, and government agencies.

  • Experience from previous Project Management/Legal or International Expansion roles.

  • Prior Experience working with U.S. companies preferred.

  • Prior Experience with the tech or e-commerce sector preferred.

  • Detail oriented, solutions-focused. Facilitates task clarity and completeness.

  • Highly collaborative and yet independent in creatively unblocking challenges and finding alternatives.

  • Multi-tasking across projects and jurisdictions guided by strategic goals and tactical priorities.

  • Able and willing to adhere to the highest values of ethics and transparency in all procurement and other negotiations in Mexico and the United States.

  • Team-player who works well-cross functionally and adept at managing multiple partners from junior to senior levels in the company.

  • Mission-driven with strong dedication to successfully completing objectives on time and under budget.
