Job Description
Head of Payments Innovation will be responsible for leading a dynamic team of professionals charged with creating, curating and executing on the innovation framework for Discover's Payments business. Specifically, the team will focus on experimenting with technologies and concepts in early stages of maturity to identify the few that offer the most potential to augment our capabilities or influence the direction of the business.
Given the team's responsibilities and focus, the incumbent will need to demonstrate expertise in the following three areas:
Payments expertise
- Familiarity with various roles Discover plays in the financial services ecosystem (payments network, card issuer, direct bank)
- Ability to communicate pros & cons of new technologies and business models in contrast with traditional payments models
- Deep understanding of market dynamics of digital commerce and potential disruption points
Innovation process expertise
- Expertise in setting up an innovation funnel aligned to business's strategic goals
- Experience of applied research, experimental development and early-stage design activities to validate / invalidate ideas
- Dedicated drive toward demonstrable and measurable outcomes rather than activity, defining success criteria and designing effective processes
Leadership orientation
- Ability to champion Discover's Payments innovation agenda, internally and externally
- Ability to build strong relationships with clients, client-facing teams and partner organizations, reaching across functional
- lines and partnering to find solutions
- Ability to recruit and develop talented individuals into a cohesive, high-performing team
Responsibilities:
- Identify emerging partners and next-gen payments use cases, building a strategic roadmap of
- experiments
- Run POCs, prototypes and pilots to maintain portfolio of innovation concepts in line with key
- strategic themes
- Build and manage innovation framework
- Establish delivery mechanism to bring innovations to life that will provide learnings that
- inform future product roadmaps
- Champion environment and processes that increase business agility and speed of
- experimentation
- Engage with innovation community and build external relationships
- Lead internal education efforts on innovation topics, approaches, and outcomes of learning
Minimum Qualifications
At a minimum, here's what we need from you:
- Bachelor's Degree in Business
- 10+ years of experience in Payments, Consulting or related disciplines
Preferred Qualifications
If we had our say, we'd also look for:
- 15+ years of experience in Payments, Consulting or related disciplines
