Description

Position Summary:

   

The Global Business Leader will establish the strategic direction for the hydraulics business and lead the overall implementation across multiple business units.The primary focus of the strategy will be to grow the aftermarket hydraulics services business. This role will formulate strategies to maximize profitability via both internal production and strategic suppliers - and coordinate execution across the enterprise. The incumbent will establish an intellectual property strategy across hydraulic system and component design, including hydraulic valves, cylinders, pumps, motors, etc.,  for Caterpillar products globally. Responsibilities include, managing and directing design of core hydraulic components to ensure vehicle performance, competitive costs, manufacturability/sourcing needs. Manages team members in various locations, and communicates with internal partners including Facility Managers and Vice Presidents across various Caterpillar locations throughout the world.

 

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

 

This role will include but is not limited to: 

 

Product Line Management:

  • Developing and implementing products and systems across specific product lines that meet the needs of the Prime Products, OEM and aftermarket parts business for cost, functionality, availability, quality and reliability.

  • Leading the corporation in the development and application of implement control systems, hydrostatic drive systems, fan drive systems, steering systems, braking systems, cylinders, and other hydraulic systems that deliver increased customer value while meeting prime product cost goals.

  • Responsible for the selection and development of next generation hydraulic technologies. Proper execution of this responsibility will have a material impact on Caterpillar’s ability to differentiate machinery over the next 10 years.

Aftermarket Parts Growth:

  • Managing the portfolio of Hydraulics aftermarket parts to maximize enterprise profitability and parts sales growth.

  • Establishing and executing aftermarket parts OPACC Improvement Agenda.

Sourcing Strategies/Geographic Location:

  • Making component sourcing and investment decisions based on total enterprise revenues and costs.
  • Determining, with EO approval, the continents/ regions where hydraulic component manufacturing should take place. 
  • Ensuring that Hydraulic products and their sourcing enhance enterprise parts revenue and service opportunities.

Order Fulfillment Plans:

  • Developing and executing Engineered Value Chain plans (including long range capacity planning, capacity allocation, common process definition and capital investment plans), to meet the Long-Term Forecast requirements.

New Technologies/NPI Deliverables/Process Partner Alignment:

  • Identifying new technologies needed for fulfilling product line MGPP’s through NPI, develops Intellectual Property and Brand management strategies and implements those strategies through NPI in a manner consistent with the long-term sourcing strategy.

  • Managing the development, design control and NPI programs to achieve the reliability, commercial success, financial ROI commitments, and program schedules of hydraulic components and systems.   

Growth Opportunities/ Mergers and Acquisitions:

  • Pursuing growth opportunities of Hydraulic components and systems to external OEM’s where strategically appropriate, to better leverage the enterprise investment in the component businesses. 

  • Effectively working with other Product Managers to rationalize hydraulic components from and within acquired products components and parts. 

Quality/Reliability:

  • Achieving hydraulic component and system reliability goals through product and process design and quality plans, continuous product improvement (for made and purchased components), and supplier collaboration.

  • Monitoring adherence to quality standards and develops action plans for addressing below standard performance.  

Hydraulic Component Product Lifecycle Management/Worldwide Sales and Service Support:

  • Managing the complete component life cycle by developing and executing product support strategies.

  • Maintaining lifecycle parts availability including designing for upgrades and retrofit, for regulatory, productivity, lower owning and operating costs, safety improvements, leveraging technology to improve existing machine and engine population where possible, providing for remanufacturing where appropriate, and canceling part numbers as soon as they are no longer required.

  • Providing worldwide sales support, including service engineering, product problem resolution capability, warranty administration and development of value communication tools.   

Competitive Landscape/Commercial Relationship:

  • Conducting periodic reviews as appropriate of the competitive landscape, including emerging competitors and technologies, costs, prices, performance, features, durability and reliability.

  • Utilizing this information to establish strategies to maximize operational profit growth, components and systems being managed.

  • Effectively utilizes this information to construct appropriate commercial relationships, including prices and warranty support, with internal process partners and OEM’s.



The position manages a department through subordinate supervisors/managers and professionals. The incumbent provides direction, focus, motivation, and encouragement for subordinates. The position is responsible for all personnel issues and performance evaluation of subordinates.

 

 

Moderate travel will be required (~ 25% of working time).

   

Qualifications

 

Required Qualifications: 

 

  • Proven track record of success in building initiatives end-to-end, including defining objectives, project planning, resource allocation, KPI development, and implementation.

  • At least fifteen years engineering or manufacturing experience

  • A minimum of 10 years supervisory experience, including at least 5 years managing of technical managers. 

  • College or university degree or equivalent experience.  Advanced degree preferred. 

  • Experience managing a large multi-hundred-million-dollar P&L.

  • Knowledge of financial reporting and investment analysis is preferred.

  • Deep commercial knowledge and Global experience.

  • Strong leadership and change management capabilities with the ability to enlist the help of others without direct reporting lines is required.

  • Strong communication skills - proven ability to communicate with a wide breadth of audiences: marketing, media, supply chain, technology partners, and agencies.

  • Excellent project management skills, including ability to concisely advise on progress, roadblocks and success to drive project progress.

 

Top Candidates Will Also Have:

  • Proven ability to create and successfully deliver global business strategies that includes sales and marketing.

  • Deep knowledge of industrial equipment/component aftermarket sales and branding strategies.

  • Thorough understanding of global purchasing, IP and sourcing strategies, particularly China

  • Worked outside the US for a period of time.

The location is flexible and can be based in Mossville, Deerfield, Chicago, Aurora, IL or Cary, Clayton, NC. We will provide relocation assistance & services to those that are eligible.
