The Transportation Director leads both the daily execution as well as the overall transportation design/strategy for a grocery delivery business scaling to $1.25 billion. Daily transportation execution primarily focuses on yield management, route planning, order tracking, 3rd party management and on-time execution. Responsible for the strategic design, capital investment and procurement of the delivery fleet of 700+ trucks. This includes transportation vendor relationship management on items such as fuel, 3rd party same-day delivery partners, delivery carts and truck maintenance. This role contains a heavy focus on innovation and all transportation related technology to optimize the Transportation operations budget for 30+ facilities. In addition, local transportation managers across 6 market areas indirectly report into this role for delivery execution against the Transportation P&L.

Recipe for Success - What's “in store” for the role  

• Direct Smart Mile daily production routing for all Peapod facilities, running 24/7 operation to support 14 delivery shift capabilities, with staff of 14, ensure 100% up-time
• Lead the continual advancement of all software/technology strategy for Smart Mile (production routing environment & truck/order tracking)
• Lead the strategy and design of all applications related to transportation, customer delivery experience and all corresponding KPI data working closely with Peapod Business Systems and Analytics
• Lead all transportation software related agreements/partnerships working with both SVP of Technology and VP of IT Infrastructure to support production and developmental environments
• Create and lead new Central Dispatch (On Road Support, ORS) department with staff of 23. Implement all systems and process integration with field operations. Near 24/7 centralized support team requiring 99.9% uptime
• Develop strategic path and manage project sequencing, initiation and implementation as for all transportation technology including handheld driver devices, field scanning, navigation systems, truck cameras etc
• Transportation lead on all cross-functional development with Peapod Web & Marketing/Commercial teams in relation to the “Delivery Times Page” on peapod.com. Focus on Smart Mile yield management, leveling of consumer demand and promoting overall revenue growth
• Budget and project plan for all RoadNet production system related items including, bug fixes, overall health of production routing environment as well as annual software version/hardware upgrades
• Optimize transportation costs for fleet of 700+ trucks and requisite driver workforce including, truck depreciation, insurance, fuel, maintenance and labor cost
• Create strategic direction on all aspects of last mile delivery to support revenue growth to $1.25 billion in the Midwest, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic
• Lead same day business requirements creation translating work into IT development along with SOPs for operational execution. Business lead for 3rd party integration into Peapod systems including website and mobile application
• Close interaction with Peapod executive team on the continual long term strategic advancement of the distribution network. Strategy includes network design with Warehouses, Warerooms, HSC and store-pick models, ensure ample order capacity and optimized cost structure
• Lead the continual advancement of all standardized operating procedures for the driver delivery process including training protocols and driving safety working closely with the Manager of Transportation Training, Safety & Audit and field operations

The Essentials In Your Cart - The required ingredients 

• 20+ years experience managing 3rd party transportation carriers and vendors
• Bachelors Degree in Supply Chain Management- Transportation
• Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
• Experience with systems such as Mobile logistics hardware/software, Roadnet, Opti-Site Network, MobileCast, iOS hardware, Navigation systems/software, Lytx DriveCam, SQL 
• Experience with strategy development
• Excellent problem solving and strong analytical skills.
• Travel Required 10-20% of the time
