Product Manager

NORC at the University of Chicago seeks a Product Manager to join the NORC Labs team.  This is a newly created and client-facing role that will have the opportunity to directly impact the growth and development of NORC’s new product/service offerings.  In this strategic business role designed to create and build new solutions for existing and emerging industries, you will create value for clients leveraging NORC’s core strengths in data science and analytics.  This role offers the opportunity to work in an environment that blends entrepreneurial spirit and start-up mentality with the stability, experience, and backing of NORC; built on 76 years of research success. 

The Product Manager will work on discovery and definition of new products and services, planning and execution of marketing strategies and programs, development and measurement of metrics and KPIs, and evaluation of product and service performance.  This individual will also will also work closely with sales and marketing to ensure alignment, and will recommend changes to current products or services based on market research and industry trends.

The Product Manager manages and directs product and service development strategy and activities to bring new products to market or effectively manage existing product line performance and is responsible for developing the product strategy and roadmap.  Understands and prioritizes client needs and business ROI. Evaluates and resolves technical feasibility, design, and production issues. Is accountable for product direction and translation of business needs into solution requirements. The successful candidate will be the product expert with respect to understanding the market, customer and partner resources alongside product development. Ensures marketing/promotional literature match product specifications. Researches and monitors existing client base and industry developments and identifies potential new product opportunities. Works with other departments to establish a design, technology, product development, and vendor strategy. Manages project budgets and prepares financial analysis reports for senior management. Makes recommendations for new products or services based on knowleddge of market.

  • Analyzes product and market data relating to current and potential NORC offerings; reports and makes recommendations on enhancing same.
  • Identifies and investigates new product and services opportunities.  Responsible for strategy for development of new product and service categories by identifying or investigating market opportunity, potential partners, and operational considerations.  Provides recommendations that enable commercialization of new product categories.

  • Responsible for all aspects of product management in executing product launches, including budget management and cost control, quality of deliverables, and completion of deliverables on schedule.
  • Develops key metrics for products and services performance and creates processes to track, analyze, and act upon post launch.
  • Develops and articulates a business case for recommended product initiatives; identifies and negotiates with third parties to assess partnerships and opportunities.
  • Supports business development activities for proposal, pricing, and contracting support for product and service delivery initiatives.
  • Ensures that client expectations of timelines and deliverables or met or preferably exceeded.  Manages the client relationships as needed.
  • Train and on-board new hires in product development processes and procedures. Serve as mentor for Product Development Analysts and Senior Analyst team members by providing deliverable oversight and general support.  Plans and formulates aspects of business development proposals, projects, and products, such as objective or purpose of projects, applications that can be utilized from findings, pricing, and resource requirements.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, IT, or analytical related field is required.  Master’s degree is preferred.
  • At least 5 years' experience in relevant field such as marketing and/or product development.
  • Knowledge required:  Knowledge of the process for identifying customer needs and defining products and services to fulfill those needs. Knowledge of tools and techniques for collecting, collating and analyzing information about existing or potential markets and market needs.
  • Skills required:  Well developed problem solving skills, data analysis, time management, personal organization, attention to detail, discretion, and composure skills.   Strong communication skills, including the ability to articulate business offerings and proposed solutions in client settings will be very important.  Ability to work in a hands-on and collaborative manner. 
  • Abilities required:  Ability to manage multiple projects with agility and work effectively with multiple departments, stakeholders and internal/external clients.  Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with minimal supervision.  Ability to successfully influence cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with data and analytics within the healthcare space will be valuable, but is not specifically required.
  • Advanced ability to communicate effectively (oral and written) at all levels.  Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients and report writing for client deliverables for projects low, medium, and high complexity.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, including word processors, spreadsheets and graphics (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
