Quantitative Research MDP Track Program Manager

Morningstar's Quantitative Research Group creates independent investment research and data-driven analytics designed to help investors and Morningstar achieve better outcomes by making better decisions. We utilize statistical rigor and large data sets to inform the methodologies we develop. Our research encompasses hundreds of thousands of securities within a large breadth of asset classes including equities, fixed income, structured credit, and funds. The Role:
As a Program Manager, you will be responsible for the Morningstar Development Program - Quantitative Research Track. We believe people are our most important asset and the Quantitative Research MDP track is dedicated to developing early career talent into having long and successful careers at Morningstar. This role is based in the Chicago office.
As Program Manager, you will also be responsible for the Learning & Development of the Quantitative Research team. Learning and Development is critical to the success of the Quantitative Research team. This includes initial onboard training as well as ongoing training to help the team stay current in the industry. You will be expected to keep pace with trends in software engineering, computer science, data science, and financial research industries.
As a manager and mentor, you will be expected to adopt an "iron sharpens iron" attitude where the focus is on making everyone better by leveraging your colleagues' strengths, facilitating their growth, and collaborating as a group to build new analytics.
This is a highly visible role with significant interaction with the Director of Quantitative Research, Director of Technology, Talent & Culture, and business leaders looking to hire quantitative talent. This position reports to the Director of Product Management, Manager Research and Quantitative Research, with the Director of Quantitative Research as a matrix manager.
Job Responsibilities
- People Management - Quantitative Research MDPs will report into you and dotted line into the functional manager, such as the Quantitative Research Manager. Mentoring the people below you by fostering their development and positioning them for success is critical. You will be comfortable giving constructive feedback on both work and professionalism for early career employees.
- Operationalize the Quantitative Research MDP program - You will manage the rotational aspects of the MDP track. You will drive the program from hiring candidates into the program, facilitating rotations, ensuring competencies are met and deliverables are completed.
- Onboarding - You will work with the Research leaders to develop and own the onboarding process and initial intake training for analysts and engineers.
- Learning & Development - You will be responsible for ensuring the team is skilled on current technology stack and statistical concepts. Work with the research managers to tailor trainings for individual team members.
Qualifications
- A minimum of a bachelor's degree or its equivalent
- Minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience
- Minimum 2 years with people management
- Excellent communication skills, high emotional intelligence, strong analytical skills and curiosity
- Proven ability to learn quickly and proactively take responsibility
- Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
- Ability to educate, train, and communicate with early career employees
- Ability to improve and scale existing programs
- Intellectual curiosity for the world of quantitative research
- Interest to learn and grow in people management
- Familiarity with Morningstar Data
- Fluent in both oral and written English.
