Chicago-based startup finishes near top of HIMSS pitch contest

Chicago startup TeleHealthRobotics finished tied for second place at a pitch contest at the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society yearly conference, which concludes today at McCormick Place. Pay for your meal like you pay for an Uber: Reserve launches in Chicago

Reserve, the app that allows users to easily reserve a seat at a restaurant that suits them, announced April 14 that it is launching in Chicago. In a blog post on the site, Reserve CEO and co-founder Greg Hong called this launch the company’s biggest yet. Reserve is starting with 20 restaurants in Chicago. [Built In Chicago]

Chicago-based online lending platform Avant announced April 13 the launch of Avant Institutional Marketplace. The program allows institutional investors to buy loans created by the Avant tech platform. Global investor KKR led the $400 million financing for the new program, and Victory Park Capital and Jefferies contributed, as well. [Built In Chicago]

Northwestern-born startups score half of available funding at Clean Energy Challenge

Two Northwestern University-born cleantech startups walked away from yesterday’s Clean Energy Challenge with half of the $1 million made available for funding. AMPY, an Evanston-based startup that creates a wearable device designed to track one’s kinetic energy in order to recharge his or her smartphone and other USB-powered devices, scored $200,000. Likewise, NuMat Technologies, a Skokie-based startup with technology that limits the need to highly compress gases, netted $300,000. [Built In Chicago]

Languallama wins 2nd annual Campus 1871

The second annual Campus 1871 was held last weekend, bringing together 84 students from 1871’s collegiate affiliates for a weekend hackathon. Languallama, an app and website designed to help people learn new languages, won the contest, beating out 11 other ideas that students had voted into the competition.
