Could app-based, real-money gambling be on the horizon?

A hefty chunk of tech companies today aspire to be the “Uber for X.” From dog walkers and physicians to groceries and main courses from your favorite hole in the wall, today’s consumers want what they want — exactly when they want it.

One local company is hoping to cash in on that trend. But they’re not bent on bringing anything to your door.

They’re bringing it to your wrist.

Meet Purple Gator, a Chicago-based game developer who’s partnered with the gaming giants at Pinball Hall of Famer Larry DeMar’s LED Gaming to bring the authenticity of in-person slot machines to Apple Watch.

Their new app, Double Lock Nudge, marries the convenience of app-based gambling with the traditional experience you might have had on-site at your favorite casino. The app recreates the signature audio/visual features you’d find in-person and is the first slot machine app of its kind to introduce haptic technology to integrate a tactile element as well.

Although you can’t yet win any money from the app, LEDGaming’s director of business development Steven DeMar is going all in on the idea that you will be able too — and soon.

“It’s not a question of if, but when,” said Steven DeMar, director of business development at LEDGaming said in a release. “This is our first step, and I couldn’t be more excited about our competitive advantage and imaginative team.”

“One day our players will be winning real money while spinning slots on a flight or commuting on the train to work,” he added. “You can bet on it.”

As it stands, online gaming with real cash payouts are currently legal in just two states, but DeMar said he’s confident that more states will follow suit in the future.

Currently, the app is all play money. But as states relax their regulations as DeMar hopes, LED plans to raise the stakes.

Since its launch in 1999, LED’s team has been responsible for some of the most successful pinball and video games in the world. They paired up with the newcomers at Purple Gator after a serendipitous meeting at Techweek Chicago.

“The old wily veterans, on the prowl for new ways, dusted off their dinosaur and collaborated with the young, tech-savvy, future-driven millennials,” said Andrew Nadhir, CEO of Purple Gator in the statement. “It was a perfect match of old school knowledge meets new school technology.”

Double Lock Nudge is currently available for $2.99 in the App Store.
