Eight.

In 1951, the 22nd Amendment took effect, setting the maximum presidential term at eight years — mirroring George Washington’s original presidential tenure.

While the idea of ‘president for life’ might appeal to some, for most, term limits serve as a welcome check on authority. Great leaders recognize when it’s time to pass the torch, a turnover that not only keeps political rivals in check but also nurtures new leadership and encourages fresh policy ideas.

Interestingly, Gallup’s historical presidential job approval ratings tend to be higher for presidents who serve one term compared to those who serve two. Moreover, Gallup found that the average approval ratings during a president’s first term are generally higher than during their second term.

In the business world, as companies grow, a new leader with a different perspective can ignite innovation and drive growth in unexpected ways. It’s about more than just holding onto power; it’s about serving the company’s mission.

ABN AMRO Clearing and Bounteous are embracing this principle, having recently elected two new leaders to the team.

Built In Chicago sat down with Chief Human Resources Officer Jodi Coplan and Vice President of Alliance Development Sabrina Tanguay to learn about their experience taking the reigns and  leading their teams to new heights.

Tell us about yourself. What position are you stepping into? What's your professional background? Why were you recruited to lead this team?

I am a passionate Human Resources (HR) professional who enjoys creating and supporting a great employee experience. I’ve been in the field for many years, most recently leading HR for a global powerhouse in consulting innovation, design, and transformation. Before that, I was part of the HR team at a technology services company. Having worked in the nonprofit sector, professional services and now fintech. It doesn’t matter the industry, my passion and business is people.

“It doesn’t matter the industry, my passion and business is people.”

I am Midwest at heart, growing up in Wisconsin, attending college in Indiana (Go Hoosiers!), and landing my first job in Chicago. The role gave me exposure to employment law, which I enjoyed and led me to pursue a career in HR.

My personal and professional experience has led me to the role of Chief Human Resources Officer for ABN AMRO Clearing USA. I am privileged to become the new people leader to this organization where there is a great opportunity to make an impact with our team.

Beyond onboarding and getting up to speed on the workings of your new team, what's your first order of business in your new role?

After a few short weeks with the company, I am already impressed by how much the HR team has accomplished. Many new benefits have been added and processes have become more structured. As I learn the inner workings of the company and more about the culture, I am excited to build additional engagement initiatives such as a peer recognition program and learning and development programs. We have a great management team in place that is open to new ideas and innovation.
