5 tech events you can't miss this week

Forecasts predict that Chicago is in for an unseasonably warm week. Why not seize the opportunity to get out and spend some time with fellow members of the tech community? This week’s events include a workshop on trademarking, a chat with the director of Google for Entrepreneurs, and a panel discussion on the best advice Midwest CEOs ever received.

MATTER Workshop: Understanding the Complications of Trademarking – A Hands-On Approach, January 25 at 9:30 a.m.

Does your startup own the rights to any registered trademarks? Perhaps more importantly: does it violate somebody else’s? If the answer to either of these questions is “I’m not sure,” you should probably consider attending this Northwestern Entrepreneurship Law Center trademark law workshop. Participants will learn how to look up trademark claims that affect their businesses, and how to best protect their own proposed trademarks on a federal level.

The Best Advice I Ever Got, January 26 at 5:30 p.m.

What is the best advice you ever got, and how did it help you change your career for the better? At this panel discussion put on by Chicago Innovation Awards and Vistage — a CEO and leadership development group — CEOs from leading regional businesses will be discussing the best advice they ever got, and the impact it had on their lives.

Driving IoT Business Value, January 27 at 7:45 a.m.

As sinking component costs allow more and more industries to make their devices smart and interconnected, many businesses sit on treasure troves of underutilized data. At this half-day IoT event hosted by BlueMetal — an insights and analytics firm — participants will learn how to process large volumes of data, use pre-packaged services for alerts and adopt dashboards to predict trends and enhance their businesses.

Startup Grind Chicago Hosts Mary Grove (Google for Entrepreneurs), January 27 at 6 p.m.

Meet Google for Entrepreneurs director Mary Grove, who leads Google in supporting startups and entrepreneurs across the world. Grove is also the co-founder of Silicon North Stars, a nonprofit whose mission is to inspire young Minnesotans to become technology leaders, and a former board member of the Techstars foundation.

Tech in Motion January Winter Mixer, January 27 at 6 p.m.

Network with fellow members of the Chicago tech community at this mixer in River North. Presenters at the event include
