5 Chicago tech events you definitely don't want to miss this week

Every week, we bring you the best events in Chicago tech. Our first full week back after Memorial Day weekend, we’ve got a full slate of events that should tickle pretty much anyone’s fancy. If you’re a tech geek, consider Fullstack Academy’s intermediate JavaScript workshop or RailsBridge’s Ruby on Rails primer. If finance wonkery is more your style, we’ve got events covering Finance 101 and raising venture capital. Finally, the Illinois SBDC council is hosting a four-part workshop series on starting your own business. Read on for details, and check out our events calendar for more events.

Finance 101 — basic terminology & business valuation, June 7 at 9:30 a.m.

Having a great product is only the first step toward building a successful business. If you want to thrive in a competitive marketplace, you’ll also need to get your business fundamentals together. At this morning session hosted by MATTER, business lawyer Greg Grossman will cover everything from company structures to equity, debt and alternative fundraising methods.

Free intermediate JavaScript workshop, June 7 at 6 p.m.

Find yourself at a plateau on your path toward becoming a JavaScript developer? Don’t despair. At this free workshop hosted by Fullstack Academy, you’ll get a primer on intermediate JavaScript concepts like objects, inheritance and functions. This workshop requires a basic understanding of JavaScript syntax, so make sure to refresh your memory before going. Oh, and bring your own laptop.

How to raise venture capital, June 8 at 6 p.m.

At this Entrepreneurial Series event hosted by 1871 and Hyde Park Angels, you’ll learn more about the ins and outs of raising a round: What differentiates a Series A from a Series B? How should you weigh convertible debt against equity? What are VCs looking for? What constitutes a good deal? Panelists include the CEOs of Avant and Rithmio, and VCs representing three separate investment firms.

How to start your business: Venture Start, June 9 at 6 p.m.

Thinking about starting a business? This workshop put on by the Illinois Small Business Development Council will give you a primer on the things you need to know before embarking on that journey, ranging from the crucial first steps to what resources are available to Illinois entrepreneurs. This event is part one of a four-part series.

Ruby on Rails workshop for women & non-binary people, June 10 at 5:30 p.m.

Ruby on Rails is one of the best frameworks out there for building dynamic web applications. But where should you start if you’re looking to learn? This free two-day workshop, which does not require any previous programming experience, will guide you along the crucial first steps of the way. Hosted at Braintree’s offices, the event is primarily for people who identify as women — but anyone is welcome to come along as an attending woman’s guest.

Also, don’t forget to get your tickets for the Fifth Annual Moxie Awards! It’s going to be a blast, and we’d hate for you to miss it.

Have a great week, and be sure to check out our events calendar for more Chicago tech events!
