The theme of September’s API Strategy & Practice Conference is that “APIs are going mainstream” -  and the very idea of having a large conference about APIs proves it. The conference, which will be hosted in Chicago September 24 to 26, will include introductory and advanced dev workshops.

Big-name digital innovators like Walgreens, WordPress and Salesforce and startups such as Keen.IO and SwiftIQ will be sending speakers. Some keynotes will be targeted solely at engineers participating in the "developer track" while others will appeal to anyone in specific industries such as enterprise, media and civic. Hackers are also invited to join a 30-minute speed hack challenge to solve problems put forth by API providers such as Twitter API and Twilio API for prizes during the conference.

3scale, the Barcelona-based API management platform that is organizing the conference, has put on similar conferences in New York, San Francisco and Amsterdam.

“The bigger API picture is coming into view,” Steve Willmott, CEO of 3scale. “APIs are becoming more mainstream in the enterprise, and the consumer side of APIs and the Internet of Things are moving ahead quickly. We’re at the beginning of mass market APIs and it’s incredibly exciting.”

Some early bird and mid-range tickets are still available for the Chicago conference, which will take place at Hyatt Regency Chicago.
